This is just a traditional way to play this music. Perfect as it is.

Love this composition by Niall. Was able to see him and Cillian at a house concert and record them playing a few tunes. Good stuff here on this video.

I could't agree more with mckr0. This is the raw bar, traditional Irish at its' best. Not a bodhran, guitar or bouzouki to be seen or heard and the better for it. I like many others went through the Bothy Band phase but would much rather now hear this music without accompaniment from any instrument. Others who like this approach would do well to listen to an album called "Comb your hair and curl it" - not so polished as Vallely and Co but still beautiful.

I play only melody on my bouzouki, we're not all tune polluters, although I must admit to enjoy listening to both unaccompanied and accompanied tunes.

It's probably because the instruments are blending so well but it sounds to me like the concertina is really low in the mix.

Or guitar with jazzy chords? Or a driving rythm?

What fqat said; a bodhran would've been sublime.

Would sound fantastic if they had a deep drum keeping the rythm

The role of the drum (bodhran) in Irish music is NOT to keep the rhytm, but enter in fusion with the existing one. These excellent musicians have already, and on purpose, an excellent sens of the rhytm. They don't need any one to "keep the rhytm" ...

traditional irish music includes the bodhran you cant just label bodhran bouzouki and guitar non traditional bothy band had them .

The bodhran is a new instruent created by Sean O'Riada in the 60'. It's a derivative from the old "tambourine", that was only used on Saint Stephen's day by the Wren's boys to "make noise", not music ... (more research in progress ...)
