Unpopular opinion: Mulan was a protagonist who just happened to be a female. Characters like Bella Swan, She-Hulk, Rey Palpatine and some other modern female protagonists are females who just happen to be protagonists. That's one of the big reasons for why many female protagonists fall flat these days.

To this day, Mulan remains among my favorite Disney movies and my favorite female characters. I think honoring or being someone our parents can be proud of is something we’ve all related to in some way.

One thing I loved about this movie is that when Shan-Yu learns Mulans true identity as a woman he doesn't go "bUt yOuR a *gUrL!1!?!* " he sees Mulan for EXACTLY what she is, the soldier who wiped out 99.9% of his army with one cannon shot. And he's ready to take her head for it.

@@silashurd3597 Yes, they did. Also, a surprising number of cultures had female warriors throughout history. The Aztecs, early Germanic tribes and Egypt (just to name a few) all had small numbers of warrior women at various time periods. Ironically, even China had some women warriors. Fu Hao, confident and consort to the emperor Wu Ding, led troops during the Shang dynasty.

Mulan will forever be my favorite Disney Animated classic for one reason: It's two movies in one. The first half, is pure Disney magic: Music, joyness, beautiful characters. The second half, by far the most serious animated film that Disney has ever put out. When Mulan and company find the Death Army, the movie changes completely. No more songs, no more Disney Magic, pure drama, storytelling, character growth, action scenes and great plot twists. That's how you make a pure good film, unlike the 2020 remake.

To this day it still baffles me the Academy snubbed this song for a nomination of Best Original Song. I’m aware I’ll Make a Man Out of You is the fan favorite, but Reflection is honestly the song that defines the central theme of the film and more worthy of a nomination.

Mulan is one of my favourite heroes who strives to try her hardest no matter what she does. When we meet her, she's clumsy, innovative and street smart. Mulan may not fit in with the standard of femininity, but she doesn't outright reject it and go on a tirade declaring "I'M NOT LIKE OTHER GIRLS". Her relationship with her father is very important where he values her as a late bloomer to give her time to fulfill her true potential What Mulan is really great at is encouraging people to think outside of the box with their problems and using creative problem solving earning the respect of her fellow soliders (Yes, I am referring to Yao, Ling and Chein Po who are the MVPS) who stick by her even when her identity has been revealed. And those KINGS served in their disguises! Finally Mulan comes full circle when she rejects the glory of being part of the Emperor's council and chooses to return to her family so she can bestow the glory she believes they deserve but quickly melts in her fathers arms when he he credits having her is the greatest thing in his life and I am an emotional wreck every damn time

She always inspired me as a little girl and still does inspire me when I re-watch. I even run to “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” and the score when she cuts her hair. That scene always gives me chills!! Mulan is also my favorite heroine, I admire her not only because she is cool when fighting. And I will always love the animated version more, seeing how Mulan surpassed herself in training, even if she was not gifted with abilities: She really is the rarest and most beautiful flower that bloomed in adversity. I admire her for her love for her family. It was what led her to have to go to war, but she ended up saving all of China. She is a heroine, that is more than just being a princess, she does not even need the title of princess to be considered a heroine and a warrior.

Disney doesn’t seem to understand that they had great representation for female characters in the 1990’s that pushed what their heroines had been. Belle, Ariel, Jasmine, Nala, Pocahontas (despite the movie being bad), Meg, Jessie from Toy Story 2, and in this case Mulan. Like you already had great female characters. Why do you like to act like you never did?

Because I guess too many people equate assertiveness with heroism. But, like you said, the 90s princesses were heroes though they're not always assertive or tough. They were heroes because they were kind and love others.

To be fair, Disney marketing Mulan as a princess seems easier to swallow than knowing a bad character like Raya is in the line up. BeaniieBrian confirmed Mirabel as part of the line up, so Mulan isn’t the only outlier anymore. Saying those two are princesses are easier than dare saying that Raya and Asha are in the line up. Disney’s next “princess” better be at least tolerable.

Mulan 2020 is an huge insult. In the original and (the ballad), Mulan was not born with chi, also chi is not a super power; don’t know where they get that information but that’s not how chi works, unfortunately. In the original, Mulan was a just a girl who wants to help the family especially her father. Mulan is a perfect female representation by equally strong as men by using wits and hard work. Mulan 2020 is straight up annoying. They made Mulan this generic girlboss and thinks she is better than her male counterparts. Whoever wrote the live action didn’t get the original or the ballad.
