Here is a mule deer buck that I have trail cam videos and videos of in hunting season. I was filming this deer and as he started to run he dropped his left side, bedded down after running 400 yds, I stalked behind a small brush and waited 25 minutes until the buck decided to start running again and shaking off his right side with the drop tine.

I wondered why this happens, so I looked it up: Antlers grow from a pedicle, which is the attachment point to the animal's skull. When a buck's testosterone levels drop after the rut or mating season, a new bone cell called an osteoclast removes the existing bone tissue between the pedicle and antlers, causing them to fall off.

Cool info! I'm still wondering _why_ they do it though, why expend the energy growing new antlers each year? My guess is that, if the antlers are fresh every year, they're stronger and better for fighting?

@@daemonburns-waight2421 yes, because they are external bones after the velvet comes off they can't grow or repair themselves. Just like teeth. Regrowing new ones allows them to make bigger antlers, and ensures that a broken antler of the past won't follow them for life.

Over the past 35 years I have found hundreds of antlers on our land. It is unusual to find a matched set but it does happen occasionally. Most of my finds have been small antlers, not whoppers like the ones in the video. I saw them up and give them to dog owners for their dogs to chew on.

A relative of mine had a farm for whitetail deer to be raised and released to help the population, and although I've found several shed deer antlers in the wild in my life, even on that farm with all sorts of opportunity to observe bucks from the comfort of the house, no one in our family had ever actually seen them drop off as it happened. I've never even seen it on film before. Amazing that both were caught on film at the same time!

@@juniorhernandez3347 "humane" is referring to positive aspects of humanity, that we should all strive towards. it's just a made up word used as a descriptor, it's not too serious bruh.
@raerohan4241
@raerohan4241 2 жыл бұрын
@@juniorhernandez3347 It's called being humane because it was previously believed that "cruelty" is animalistic, while "kindness" and "empathy" are purely human characteristics. Today, we know this isn't true - there are other animals capable of those traits and others like altruism, etc. But it's true that it is a very rare trait in the animal kingdom. Nature itself is cruel. "Every man for himself" is the default, not a mindset unique to humans.
