Mulkharkha Lake, nestled in the Himalayan foothills, lies at the border of Sikkim and West Bengal. On clear days, the lake offers a stunning reflection of the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. It is located amidst Neora Valley National Park at 7400 ft above sea level, offering a rich biodiversity and pure forest experience. The lake is considered sacred by the locals and is often referred to as a “wishing lake” or “Manokamna Lake” where it’s believed that wishes made there come true. The local villagers celebrate Ram Navami at the Ram Mandir near the lake with great fervor, worshipping its sanctity. You can also see the reflection of the temple along with the Mt. Kanchenjunga in the lake.

After a beautiful experience at Jhusing, I was overwhelmed by the surreal and enchanting Mulkharka and the Mulkharka lake. Mulkharka's journey is not for the weak of heart. A route that will reposition and rearrange every organ in your body. It was both frightening and exciting. I stayed at Buddha’s Mirror Homestay as suggested by Bedu Ji from Jhusing, and I should thank him for that. The homestay was relatively new and comfortable, managed by Mr. Ramesh Chethri, who was extremely energetic and eager to show us around as much as we had energy for.

We woke up at 4:30 am the next day to accomplish what we have come to Mulkharka for. Mulkharka Lake is the only place in India which offers a reflection of Mt. Kanchenjunga in the lake on a clear day and you have to be extremely fortunate to be able to witness this event. Fortunate enough, it was a clear day and we reached the lake around 5:10 am after a short trek in the dark under a fear of possibility of a bear attack as the locals have informed. We were standing by the lake in the dark when the moment has finally arrived, The sunlight fell on Mt. Kanchenjunga and its reflection in the Lake. And over the next 45 mins we have witnessed the grandeur of Mt. Kanchenjunga in colour of white and golden as well. That whole experience was too good to be true and one to die for. I would love to keep coming back to witness this again and again.
