Thanks for watching and all the positive comments and feedback for these demo videos, it's really appreciated.
Title : Artificial Person 2019 (monoprint)
14" × 14" Oil paint on 160gsm card
Method : The first template is used as a guide for the foundation colours. The transfer sheet is a simple piece of plastic (recycled plastic bag) onto which a thin layer of oil paint is spread. Always try to use good quality paint, and don't use any thinners. For this work I've used Daler Rowney Georgian oil paint ( but other good quality brands are available)
As with most of these monoprints the templates are used as a guide to the composition, the final finish of each print is all hand crafted and the paint carefully blended to add texture, tone and depth to each piece. Takes a little practice and care should be taken when applying the different paint layers, it can be easy to use too much, thin layers work best.
Colours used
Daler Rowney Georgian oil paint :
For the base colours
Flesh Tint
Cadmium Lemon
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Deep Red
Raw Sienna
Crimson Lake
For the top layer (mixed)
Prussian Blue
Vandyke Brown
TOP TIP : This can be a messy process and if you are using oil paint regularly I would advise you to ALWAYS wear latex gloves (or similar)
Good quality paint available from Amazon
Set of 10 22ml tubes of Daler Rowney Georgian oil paint.

Sorry Dan: you'll be tired of me commenting, I will stop! But just have to say this is wonderful - and when I was young (in the 60s) I asked for and was given (for xmas) a battery-operated walking robot - so I understand your inspiration. All the best to you & thanks again for all your hard & excellent work.

Compelling video with amazing results but such an odd method! Studied printmaking at art school and not seen a method as this one. Is it possible to get a video outlining how you came to make prints this way? Would be fascinating. Have watched 3 videos so far and all of them compelling! New subbie. TFS!!

Starving Artists Collective Thanks for the positive reaction to the demo, I'm pleased you found it of interest. The technique developed by accident and I've adapted it as it developed, I enjoy trying to improvise with recycled scrap materials so that often has an influence on the way my work is produced, I always think if you get the results you want it doesn't really matter how you get there. Thanks for watching, comments and feedback always welcome.

Thank you so much, this is an amazing technique that I've never seen before - I subscribed halfway through! What is the stick-like tool that you use toward the end to add the fine lines?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 5 жыл бұрын
Leanne Stedman Thanks so much for your interest in this demo, I hope you get some good results if you give it a try. The small stick used in the demo is just a cotton bud, it helps with blending the fine lines of the oil paint, I suppose an old paint brush would work as well. Thanks for watching.

I love this technique and the way you work. I can't work with oils as I have dodgy lungs. Would it work with acrylics, maybe with some retarder in to keep it moist longer. I will try that out but not until this extreme heatwave (Australia - over 40 degrees Celsius today🙂) is over as paint dries almost before you finish the brush stroke.
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 5 жыл бұрын
Margaret Berry That is hot ! I have tried this technique with acrylic paints and it does work, I used a silkscreen medium to slow the drying time, hope it works for you when you give it a try. Thanks for watching.

@@DanTirels Thanks for that tip. I will get some silkscreen medium but first I will try with retarder as I already have some of that. Much cooler today and overcast -around 25 degrees Cels🧡ius - very pleasant.

@DanTirels
@DanTirels 5 жыл бұрын
Ιουλία Ηλιάδη You can use this technique with acrylic paint, but because of the faster drying time for acrylic you will need to use a medium that slows the drying time, I've used a silk screen medium which works.

Just love all your videos Dan. How long does it take for the oil paint to dry once you finish the artwork? Is it weeks or months?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 5 жыл бұрын
Fran Yeoh Thanks for watching the demos. The good thing about this technique is because the oil paint is used in very thin layers it should dry in 24 hours. I always use good quality paint with no thinners.

What do you use for the stencil and at times do you use a type of plastic wrap that is the initial surface which you put the paint on? Have been exploring various ways to break the surface so many thanks for sharing.

Do you gesso the paper before applying the oils? Love your work!
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't found it necessary to apply gesso, the paper used is 200gsm, and the oil is applied in very thin layers. I will experiment with different surfaces and find a smooth thick card is ideal. Thanks for watching the videos and I appreciate your comments.
