Saw them in 1980, sadly without Uli Roth who had just been replaced by Mathias Jabs (but Mathias was perfectly fine). The highligh in my memory is Rudolf Schenker and his amazing stage presence. Btw their best album according to me is their double live" Tokyo Tapes" ... they already knew where to find the best audience 😉 (and that japanese audience was full of aspiring musicians who would form the first heavy japanese bands of the eighties!)
@yang-it-yin70022 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Love the "Tokyo Tapes" and the Japanese audience. I often wondered how the band would have evolved if Uli Roth had remained with them if they would have taken the similar course as they did once Mathias Jabs joined them. It's possible since Rudolf Schenker wrote most of the material. I love how Mathias plays and he is a great lead guitarist and a good fit with the band. But I feel Uli Roth is a special guitarist with genius-level skill and artistry. I feel he has been a totally underrated guitarist.

@@yang-it-yin7002 Uli left the band because the music he wanted to write didnt fit with the Scorpions monika. He has been quoted of saying he wished he had stayed to do one more album. Maybe a collaboration maybe reborn in the future, who knows.

It's a shame people don't know anything before Lovedrive. Tokyo Tapes is one of the best live albums made. Kojo No Tsuki segued into Robot Man, the double bass drum solo, the Hound Dog cover, and the killer All Night Long, exclusive to this album and probably the best album opener in history. Worldwide Live pales in comparison. I'm also a huge Fly to the Rainbow fan, as drugged out and psychedelic as it is lol

In 1988 I went to a Monsters of Rock concert at a local raceway (outdoors). This is the line up- Van Halen, Dokken, Kingdom Come, Metallica, Scorpions.

The live version on Tokyo Tapes is even better. The last section has been developed with fantastic drumming carrying it into new heights. Along with the guitar too.

1970s Scorpions were about 100x more interesting than the better known, way more commercial 80s version, IMO. "The Sails of Charon" is IMO their best song, ever. In truth I also prefer 70s Priest to the more popular 80s stuff, so I might be biased. Also, Vlad Chupin has good taste in music. Just saying!

I agree on all counts! I agree that "The Sails of Charon" is their best song, I think Uli Jon Roth (lead guitarist) had a lot to do with that song's greatness. He is truly an underrated guitarist. I wonder if he stayed with the Scorpions how much different they would have become. Maybe things would have evolved similarly as they did after Matthias Jabs replaced him. Don't know it's possible since most of the music was written by Rudolf Schenker. Don't get me wrong I love Matthias Jabs style of playing just curious if the band would have evolved in a similar way. Nonetheless, The Scorpions we're a great band and we're one of the bands that had shaped my love for type of music and hold great memories of my youth. I also prefer 70's era Priest. Anything after "Defenders of the Faith" I can do without.

I've chosen this song pretty randomly, actually. I was browsing through their official channel, and saw the song which I've never heard before, I think. So, I listened to it a couple of times and thought that it'd be cool as an introductory piece for Wave to hear from this legendary band. It has a lot of dynamic changes throughout the song, I thought it's pretty much BAND-MAID like, in a sense 😁 I know most of Scorpions discography, I think. I've listened to them since the mid-80s, they are immensely popular in Russia. I do agree that Sails of Charon is a wonderful song. But they have so many hits, it's not really a big issue which song to choose. I wanted to say that my favourite album is Eye II Eye... but then I recalled all the other amazing releases and understood that no, Eye II Eye was just different, that's why it caught my attention like this. Their early albums are particularly noteworthy.

@@VladimirChupin Agreed. I think the most fun aspect is to take folks who :know" the Scorpions (Winds of Change, Tease Me, Please Me, Rock You Like Hurricane), and show them what they USED to sound like. Way more experimental. I remember the first time I actually heard Taken by Force... wasn't until the early/mid 2000s, and I had no clue that it was the Scorpions. Same with Judas Priest. Was never a fan because I found the popular stuff (Breaking the Law, Living after Midnight) mostly boring, with Painkiller being the only album I owned. Then someone played me Dissident Aggressor, and it made me look into pre British Steel era Priest.... and was blown away. *sighs*

70s music is just top tier hands down. buffed out after 60s but still raw and gritty pre 80s

Hey Wave Potter, newly discovered your channel and I like how you share some of your musical experience with us. Immediately after hearing this song another hidden gem springs to my mind, which you may like give a try, because it's very unique. The song is 'Am Fenster' from 'City' also from 1978 and it is known for it masterful violin play.

Vlad Vlad Vlad, what a choice choice! This is before the infamous scorpions of 82-92… Rock you like a Hurricane? No one like you? Still lovin you? Winds of change? Almost no way you haven’t heard those. Their earliest stuff with Mathias Jabs (‘79 on) was my favorite, and influenced thrash gods like Kirk Hammett, and Gary Holt (Exodus, Slayer), but he was like the Eddie VH within their own established brand of german party rock. But Uli Jon Roth’s playing shown here was truly innovative, ahead of its time, and he gave their 70s stuff a slight prog twist. Also, 2 ballads (of this type) per album, they were way ahead in the race for the perfect power ballad; still loving you was as epic as home sweet home, and the same year I think. Huge I tell ya, enormous… great albums if you need a pick-me-up. And talented. Check this live very rearranged version of 1980’s Holiday, with an extended band, and tailor made for this audience, Luxembourg 2005 (tho it feels like Mediterranean flair to me) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGLCeoKNbdede5Y

I see you did a reaction to the phenomenal Dimash. But you know, there is a big debate today as to who is the best singer in the world, Dimash or Angelina Jordan. To get a little sample of Angelina, check out her black and white video cover at age 9 of the 50's classic I Put a Spell on You. But if you do, you should also know Angelina sings in at least 10 more styles, and is the master of every one.
