In this video you can learn how to create some multi layered stencils using your cricut Explore air 2 to create some awesome graffiti style artwork. Using the website stencilcreater.org as an easy accessible way to create our layers we then use the svg files to cut on the cricut. It’s an awesome website to play with and upload some family pics to create some unique art. To get that really cool graffiti effect spray paint is then used but less toxic options like paint rollers or brushes are a great alternative if you’d like to use this as a project for the kids.
Link to online software: www.stencilcreator.org/
Machine: Cricut Explore Air 2: amzn.to/3I8rDBs
Blades: amzn.to/3KimaKl
Paper stencils: A3 Size White Poster Board, 230 gsmThickness : amzn.to/4btG4hw
Canvas: Just the cheapest one I could find at the office supply store
Spray cans: Ironlak Sugar -Use whatever is available to you and has a great color range. Montana, belton, Loop, Flame are all great spray cans to use. amzn.to/3I4AJyY

@WickedPaint 2 жыл бұрын
Well I bought my cricut explore air 2 a couple of years ago and its still going strong. I use it for cutting stencils mostly from 220gsm paper or thin mylar sheets. The only limitation is the cutting size if you want to make really large stencils and the software can be a bit annoying as they like to release updates quite often which it seems you can't avoid. I would recommend taking a look to see whats available in your area and if your lucky you can pick up a bargain!

Hi! Thanks for the tutorial. I followed the instructions and was able to set up the image on Cricut but when I went to cut the stencil the images became distorted. Do you know why this happened or how to fix it?
@WickedPaint
@WickedPaint 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Barbara, thank you so much for watching and following this tutorial. It shouldn't distort as the files download as png or svg which work great in the Cricut software. One thing that helps to keep all the stencils the same size is taking it into a software like Gimp and adding a plus symbol in each corner so you can align each layer but also use the plus to cut each stencil the same size in the cricut software. If this didn't quite make sense then just send an email to wickedpaintairbrush@gmail.com and I will send you a step by step that will help you through that process.

Many thanks for uploading this !! I am a fellow stencil artist and was really searching for confirmation that multilayer stencils are possible with a cricut. @WickedPaint

Glad you enjoyed the video!! The Cricut is great for making stencils and gets great details. I am using a cricut explore air 2 which I got second hand but unused for a great deal but its certainly paid for itself with all the work I've done on it. I mainly use the cutting matt that come with the machine but also have some cheap ones from aliexpress which work great too. The trick is trying to keep them clean so they last longer. I've had the thing for about 1 year now, made about a hundred cuts and still have the original blade in the machine.

How would this work if you wanted to do a silhouette of the image first, and then add the layers on top of it to make the colors pop. I was playing with the site last night and it only separated the colors and not the entire image for a silhouette cutout.
@WickedPaint
@WickedPaint 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a good point and this method does have a few limitations as you've just pointed out. That website won't give you the option to create a silhouette. This month I'm working on creating 12 layer full colour stencil artwork in Inkscape which gives you alot more options for adjustment and control. This video will be out in a week from now and what I do in the video is start with the darkest colours and work my way to the brightest in order to get them to pop.

Check out my video first time using the Circut Explore Air 2 Blackout edition and I was just figuring it out still afterwards i made pretty cool stickers or stencils with it.

hi there great video i have wondered how you stuck the paper down to the cricket cutter board as there is no adhesive on the paper and it seams that when you put the paper on the board and pressed on it it seamed to stick

Thanks for the walk-through. However, for every image i upload to the website, the stencil files are waaay more pixelated and the image quality goes waaay down. In other words, a high res image gets reduced to a low res image. Do you know how to avoid or fix this?
@WickedPaint
@WickedPaint 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I did notice that and depending on the resolution of your image can also take ages to load. The low res does help when it comes to cutting out the stencils as they become much simpler and easier to cut especially if your doing it by hand so I imagine that is why the website creators made it that way. I have found that you can get a little bit more detail in the stencils by playing with the settings but that won't fix your high res problem. In your case if you want really high res stencils then photoshop is a better option. I will do another stencil video soon probably in Photoshop or something free as this has been my most popular video on my channel and its also really fun.

@@WickedPaint Thanks for the reply, and your honesty. I'm still going to try using Stencil Creator to see if it can do what i need - to be honest i'm just beginning trying this, so i'm not sure if the low res matters or not in the end. I've seen a couple vids where people are using Gimp, which isn't as easy as Stencil Creator (obviously) but seems easier than Photoshop. Have you tried using Gimp, and if so do you think it may be easier / less complicated than Photoshop? I'd value your opinions and advice greatly. Thanks in advance, and once again thank you so much for posting videos like this. Its extremely helpful for beginners like myself. Blessings.
@WickedPaint
@WickedPaint 4 жыл бұрын
@@jaekrieldgx8245 I've never used gimp but will definitely look into it and give it a try. One thing I like about stencil creator is it organises your layers so you don't have to create little tabs for complicated areas. If your a beginner then I would say its worth trying one or two projects in stencil creator to get your head around it and then move onto gimp or photoshop.
@WickedPaint
@WickedPaint 4 жыл бұрын
Also I got in touch the the Stencil Creator owners and they said that the algorithm is based on 400 pixels but if you want to create really large images you could cut you large image into 400 pixel squares then upload them one by one and put them back together afterwards to create your stencil. Good suggestion but sounds like too much work to me.

The online software I used stencilcreator.org does a pretty good job of removing the fine detail to simplify each layer of your stencil. You can also edit it further in the cricut software if you want to.

Great link to Stencil Creator but after you save can you use other software other than Cricut to enlarge, Im thinking Photoshop or Krita? I would like to hand cut them. Also can you make 90 x 60 cm stencils with Stencil Creator
@WickedPaint
@WickedPaint 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, taking them into photoshop is great to see how the layers line up and to add a cross in the corners to line up each layer. The stencil creator has limits to the size you can upload so you can either upload the image in pieces or re-size after wards in photoshop.

Thanks mate! Glad you liked the video. Thats a really good question and there is no number of perfect layers. If your a beginner then I would recommend starting with two or three to get your head around it and then increase detail as well as layers as your confidence grows. More layers doesn't always equal better artwork though so just have fun and make something your proud of.

And so they look all wonky, but this only happens when I load them in cri it design space.
