Multi Measure Dynamic Visuals - Data Viz Technique In Power BI

This is a seriously cool vizualization technique for Power BI. I detail this at length through the video, but essentially what we are trying to achieve here is a visual where you can change two different measures so that you can compare them.

Thank you for sharing this with us all. It helped me solve a problem I had in my Power BI Report's use-case. I wanted to use a single drill-through page from a chart having a combo of 5 measures. My filters (inside CALCULATE functions) were getting lost. This concept of yours resolved my problem 90%. a BIG Thank-You!

Hi Sam Great post ... !! So although the measures are Dynamic, the Names on the visual are not. Still Says "Selection" So my question and frustration is, how do you change the name so the selected measure. Currently, this is only possible with charts using conditional format, but not in the Matrix view. Please Help :)

Hi Sam ... this is rather late in the day but wondering if you are able to achieve what you have demonstrated but if you remove/decheck one of the measures ... are you able to remove/hide the measure field itself .. so you would then only see the selected/checked columns?

Hi Marc, This technique can only be used to Dynamically change measure and not for remove/hide Measure. There is currently no direct option available to Show/Hide Column/Measures based on Slicer Selection.

Hello Marcos Adlercreutz, thank You for posting your query onto our channel. Well the answer is it depends upon the type of visual that you're using. If you're using the Table or Matrix visual than you can definitely write a measures and create a disconnected table and use it as a slicer that if money option is selected than show the figures in terms of dollars and if the quantity is selected than replace the figures with the normal number format. But if you're trying to incorporate two different formats other than table or matrix visual then it's not possible using the formula. Hi Sam, I have created the last year year to date (LY YTD) figures and year to date (YTD) figures from original sales data in power BI using measures. And I have also created three customer groups based on the LY YTD and YTD using measures. I would like to place the groups in power BI slicer so the other users can simply choose the group that they want to see and the sales report will show. But looks like we can’t place measures in slicer. I have tried the below methods but none of them work: 1, create columns instead of measure for LY YTD and YTD. However, it’s not working as they appeared to have dependency issue. 2, using SWITCH functions tried to link the measures with the sales report, still not working. The demonstration video that I looked at only shows the total figure, but I would like to have the list of all the customers that under the selected group. 3, I’ve tried the VAR logictest but the similar issue as method 2. Do you have any suggestions? I’m not quite sure whether I’m on the right track to solve my issue but each method is so close to my expected result... really really appreciate your advise! 😊

Hello Derrick Kuria, thank you for posting your query onto our channel. Well, your question is bit unclear to us but still we'll try to provide the solution using our best judgement possible. We're presuming that you're trying to say about those two disconnected tables which we created i.e. "Selected Measure" and "Comparison Selection". So the thing is these are just used as a technique to harvest the measure in them and evaluate the results accordingly. So as you saw in the video, we've specified the argument as if anything is selected into the slicer than evaluate the results as per that selection but if nothing is selected than by default provide the one particular results. So measures such as "Total Sales", "Total Costs" and "Total Profits" as well as "Sales LM", "Sales 6M Ago" and "Sales LY" are nowhere dependent on these tables. These measures are created based on the "Fact and Dimension" tables into the data model and not based on the "Disconnected Tables" it's just they're harvested in a such a manner that when anything is selected in the form of slicers from these tables they evaluate the results accordingly. What if we select a measure which is calculated using other 2 measures? I faced this issue and I can't see the value of total revenue until I have rev 1 and rev 2 selected. Is there any solution to that?

Hi Aashi, Thanks for your comment. If you recheck the video, there is a "Total Profit" measure that is dependent on Total Costs and Total Sales measure and is working fine. Really like this; only issue is when I put the selected measure as a column in a table, I can't find a way to update the column name. Ie. if I select PY Sales, the column header should read 'PY Sales' and not 'Comparison Selection'

You can't do that using this particular technique shown here because this is look for only one measure, but it is possible. You would just need to have your formulas setup slightly different. There's a bit to it. Maybe I'll look to do this in a future video. Chrs

Hi Sam. Thank you so much for brilliant solution. It works for me so far but I cannot check and prove myself if my chart works properly. Unfortunaly, I am still noob with Power BI. I have doubts if I should add more lines (new measures?) using SELECTEDVALUES for each of my measures. In your example you added only one line (for each of comparable "sides") using SELECTEDVALUES i.e. Total Sales and Sale LY. How about others: Total Costs, Total Profit from one "side" and Sales LM, Sales 6M Ago from other "side"? Sorry if my question is not clear. Thanks, Rustem

My requirement is bit different, like if some measures are percentages and some measures are numbers then how we can show in the same bar cheat based on slicer selection. That means when i select percentage related measure then bar chart should show that measure in percentage and scale should be percentage. And if i switch to number measure then bar chart should show measure in numbers and also scale should be numbers.. Bar chart should be in same place. In reality there are 10 metrics. In that 5 metrics are percentages and 5 are numbers then based on metric selection the same bar chart should display data.
