This course identifies key components within a 4” submersible motor. Additionally, how to use a multi-meter to determine if a submersible motor is good, grounded, shorted, has open windings or mixed leads. Understanding resistance values and how they relate to troubleshooting a motor.

What about the two wire motor what should the resistance between leads be?

Why is it instructors get things so backwards. If your meter shows Infinity the circuit is open if it shows zero the circuit is shorted.

Exactly! Oh, KZbin. Here I thought I found a great video with step-by-step instructions, great graphics, etc., only to get to about 22:15 where I lost all confidence in the video when he says exactly the opposite of what's going on: he says if you get OL or 1 on your meter it means you have no resistance and all is good because the motor is not grounded. But 1) if you get no resistance (= zero resistance by definition, in other words the meter reads "zero") your motor is probably very grounded, plus 2) OL or 1 on a meter means you have so much resistance you have to up the range of your meter, or it exceeds the meters capabilities, in either case LOTS of resistance, maybe infinite, and that's what you want. So he gets it half right: OL or 1 (or lots of megohms if the meter can read that) is what you want, but to confuse very high resistance with "no resistance" is a huge conceptual mistake. To quote F&W's own manual, for the ground (insulation resistance) test, "the multimeter reading should indicate infinite or max open...." in other words the opposite of "no resistance."

Having looked ahead to the rest of the video, despite the weird flaw mentioned above (correct me if I got that all wrong) it does seem to be an exceptionally clear and well done video, and I think overall it will be very helpful to me.

My motor Y-B is 3.8 instead of 3.7 ohms Y-R is within range.. My 3W motor turns freely by hand but with power turns very slow and gets warm. How can I tell if it is the motor or motor controller.?

thanks for the video. One question on testing to see if the motor is grounded. On your chart at 24:11 in video you show the motor being grounded in red ink and the motor not grounded in green ink. So then is the motor NOT supposed to be grounded?
