Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. She also warns him that she doesn’t trust him, and that her stubborn personality might not be suitable for the wife of a general. But Ling Bu Yi also has deep secrets, and there are facts about his true identity that even he does not know. This scene was so heartbreaking, I can feel every pain she has felt from all the bullying and everything she has been holding in. This is when she should realize that no matter how harsh her family is, they will never harm her without even caring if she'd die or not. That royal palace is not a place where she could be careless and does whatever she wants without thinking of the consequences... that she must learn to be tactful and not short-sighted, that no matter how much favor she got from Ling Buyi, the empress or the emperor for her... they can't always be there 24/7 to save her ass everytime, so she needs to learn to be cautious. It's time for her to mature. I just can't buy the argument that she is still 15, because she's not living in 21st century. Her age is not comparable to 15 yo girl from 21st century. People in the past are matured earlier than us in modern time... so it's not really an excuse... and afterall... one should learn from experiences and mistakes, instead of rightheously being stubborn and says will never change. Everyone in this world will have to change and adapt to the circumstance along the time we go through...that's if we want to have a good life ahead. She should also learn not to be involved in things she doesn't know of... especially not to take a side in palace struggle. She can be filial to empress, but that should be it. One would never know who win the throne, so it is better for her...as outsider to be neutral for the sake of her own and her family's survival. Only by being neutral, she would be safe no matter who will be the next emperor. Taking a side without knowing anything about politic is the stupidest thing one can do. But I do agree that Zhao Lusi really nailed it here. She expressed the character and this scene really really well, Leo Wu lei also does his job excellently.

One of the things I am learning to appreciate about shows like this without tons of PDA, is the intimacy of little moments like them drinking from the same cup. It's almost as intimate as a kiss. It's also close to the part of the traditional wedding chamber ceremony where the couple drink wine together. Almost like a little wedding moment for them.

Then, add that little peck on his cheek, so tastefully sweet, yet so intimate, before she stood up. Ling Buyi totally lost his mind and was beyond himself with happiness, you can see his smile (which he doesn't always do). His formidable face disappeared with that peck.

However that's the fate of most women in their era, so... what she has now might even be better than what she could have got with another man, except from the fact that as an empress, she can't even leave her home and have a stroll outside at will... it's really like a bird in a golden cage. But there is no guarantee that if she was married off to another family, that her husband could even give her respect and honor as a main wife like what she has now. The emperor here treat her well and respect her, and care for her as well as her children despite not having a deep affection for her... He might be not a great lover for her, but he is still a good husband and father, he is still more or less fair in sharing his concern, he follows the rule and custom, he doesn'T neglect any of his children. The fact that he is in love with Yue Fei was never a secret. Everyone knew that Yue Fei was his childhood sweetheart. But he had to marry the empress out of gratitude..in fact, the empress fate is similar like the fate of He zhaojun and Luo Yao, the difference is just that CSS can still cancell the wedding as she doesn't want to be a second wife..(in fact, Ah Yao mother had offered this solution too). Yue Fei on the other hand, agreed to be a concubine with the equal treatment as the empress as compensation. So, the empress knew since the very beginning that she doesn't have his genuine love, at the most...she can earn his concern, respect and she can live in peace and wealth... Something that she might can get as an orphan in the Qian family... Considering how awful madam Wen xun is, marrying the emperor was probably really the best thing she could have gotten. So, there is nothing to complain actually... Which women in the past from the noble families could have the luck to be married with the man they love? Very very very rare...

The poor fearless general is at a loss when Shaoshang hugged him and started crying. His facial expression clearly shows he didn't know what to do with this sobbing Shaoshang. He has never experienced something as emotional and heartbreaking at this point yet he can't push her to tell him because he knew she won't say anything truthful. He just continued to comfort her.

18:00 everyone has to break down at some point, and not everyone cries when they do, but I appreciate that she had a loved one there to comfort her when it happened. A long, tight hug can do wonders for upset emotions

You are right. Sometimes, that is all you need. Words might trigger the pain more, so a tight hug from your loved one or a friend is all you need to calm down. It worked, but poor Buyi didn't know what to do. You can see from his facial expression (good acting, BTW) that he is trying to unwind her pain but didn't know how. The sad part, too, is that Jitong as her aide just watched, like everybody else, without even attempting to help, because she is also jealous of Shaoshang.

I think the director did a great job in directing ZLS to stifle her cries into LW's shoulder. She tends to cry like a child (and it works in romantic comedies, mostly), but here the repression makes her angst so much more heart-rending (can't think of a better word). When you get to the final 11 or so episodes you get to see the director (I assume) showing them how he wants them to play scenes. Very interesting.

Yes. In that moment, the man who truly unconditionally loves her gives her the compliments she does so deserve, he also hits spot on that when she is sincere she is sincere whole heartedly even so her own hurt, at that point (I think) she Not Only, desires to have someone she can tell her troubles to - she has Never in her 15+ years on earth had Any One Person in which to confide, because she has internalized It All - and he is expressing his Knowledge of her true character and she suddenly has a genuine CONFIDANT she can pour her soul and tears…just long enough for her to get a grip and gather herself together…But…she did not trust him enough to tell the real danger she was in that day… What A Beautiful Story. What great skill ALL of these actors are exerting to deliver the depths of their character!!!!

I agree - she was not one of my favourite actresses because in other series she over acts, especially with the crying, and it is cringeworthy - this scene was very well done and came across as genuine , like an emotional reaction anyone in the audience may have to that situation. Much better than her usual aweful overacted cryng she does. Very good.

@@nicky9187 agree with you. To be honest I've seen lusi in other dramas but never really liked her. I always felt she can only pull off cute, notorious type characters and sometimes she exaggerates in her acting. She is beautiful and cute but I never considered her someone as a 'good actress'. Only after LLTG I started acknowledging her as a good actress. Her performance was commendable in LLTG. As for Leo wu, this was my first time watching his drama. I knew about long ballad but never watched it as I'm not s fan of dilraba (I know many people would be shocked lol). But in LLTG he blew me away with his acting skills. That man acts with his eyes, his smile. One moment he is ruthless and cool and able to change into a loving passionate lover the nxt moment. Every eye contact they made gave me butterflies. Hats off to lei Wu. I'm a fan . LLTG will always hold a special space in my heart 💖

She can make you laugh so much can’t stop, make you cry, etc. I first saw her in “A female student arrives at the Imperial College. Dating in the Kitchen was ok. Shaoshang ‘s almost DROWNING ACCIDENT was so horrible and non venomous snake that bit her was ugly and cruel The tricks and schemings of Fifth Princess is just non stop. Shaoshang/Zhao Lusi & Fifth Prince is in awkward scenario but I don’t how will the story end up with. Ling Buyi’s love for Shaoshang is unmeasurable. The enclosure of sincerity almost make me cry, especially when she cried so hard, my heart aches for her. The Crown Prince has a true love present in the birthday banquet for the Empress.. He is very obviously so enamoured with her. The cunning Fifth Princess - her presentation of a very expensive dance number was disastrous at the end KARMA SURE WORKS for her scheming ability. Shaoshang/ Zhao Lusi in managing the banquet passed with flying colours. General Ling Buyi/ Leo Wu’s Qin’s knowledge was so beautiful and so realistic and his gift, too with Father’s Empress poem was so poignant and sentimental Very thoughtful, indeed. Can’t WAIT FOR THE NEXT EPISODE. Thank you so much and subtitles, too need to be recognized as international viewers do value your time and effort.

i hope i am not the only one re-watching this series. gosh this was such a beautiful drama to watch. did you guys realise that LBY caught on to the fact something happening and so he started by saying that 'he didn't get to finish her training at home" and then showed her the most deadliest Accupressure point? Like he knew that if he nudged her in that direction then she would maybe open up about what had happened. but he never crossed or forced/ his way into her personal space. Can you tell Hoe much I MISS THEM!!!!???

The script was very beautifully written, every detail that was shown in the earlier episodes connected the story in the end. It’s a very complicated revenge story but the love between the two lead characters is so enticing yet simple to follow.

What hit me the most in this ep is that now Niao Niao has a shoulder to cry in, a safe place, a person who loves her and adore her so deeply that will no insist on her answer and will wait for her and comfort her in they she wants and likes, in simple words someone who understand her. And sadly I realize how much I deep in my heart I wish I can have someone I can just cry my heart out without the need to explain my crying.

That's exactly why his acting is superb. His baby face with the usual teasing smile is not there, but you get to see how he can express himself as a rather cold and withdrawn general. It is not easy to pull that off. The director did a good job making him look intense and severe.

Not that he didn't play it all but sometimes you make mistakes live so you use a recording haha. The end looks on point with the sound but it was a bit off in timing which is why I think it was a partial recording.
