I think since we're talking about EDC, the real question is "is smaller better?" Obviously when it comes to practical use, bigger is better. If you need to saw a branch off of a tree, a proper saw is the best tool, not the saw blade on a Victorinox Huntsman. But when you're out camping you probably don't have access to your proper tools, but you do have your SAK in your pocket. Since EDC is about having compact tools in your pocket in situations in which proper tools aren't available, what makes for quality EDC gear are those that do the best possible job at the smallest and most compact size possible.

Rule of thumb: The multi-tool ought to be big enough to comfortably hold in the hand, while also being small enough to stow in a pocket. Beyond that, if it scares your friends, get new friends.

if you select one of two tools to carry you will encounter a problem that day that requires the other tool

I've thought about this too, I gave up. Both my larger and smaller tools are at home. I'm out and about with my wife's skeletool cx lol
