I'm Vietnamese, my ex bf was German. We traveled together a lot when we were dating. Before dating him, I never thought someone would plan out a three weeks long trip two months in advance. He did. He would plan activities for each day of the trip in a five-page google doc that he shared with me. Not gonna lie, I freaked out the first time I saw it. But in retrospect I guess it was a good thing. With me being spontaneous and a little too carefree, it was good to have someone more organized to keep things in check.

Yes, I once backpacked with a German and he was VERY organized and even told me a couple of times to "pay attention"! VERY shocking! Then at the end when I tried to give him a friendly hug goodbye he actually put his arms out and pushed me away! THAT was terrible! :O

I don't understand why many people are complaining about closed shops on a sunday or shops that are closed during the night. You have to keep in mind that people are working there and since every boss tries to save money, these shops are often understaffed, so the employees are pushed for time and they have to work overtime. Of course they are getting paid for that, but sometimes they don't have a choice because no one else is available. This might be one of the reasons some foreigners think the cashiers in Germany work too fast.

When I was a kid Boston had "blue lalws" and a lot of stores were closed on Sundays. Now they never close (even for major holidays).

Never understood why they just did not have Monday or Tuesday closings since the store is open for customer convenience not staff convenience. Oh, forgot, its Germany! 😙

During the 1950s and 1960s, most shops were closed on Sunday where I grew up in the US. It wasn't until about 1980 that shopping on Sunday became the norm in New Jersey (each state has different laws). So, the German experience used to be a lot closer to that in the US.

I'm from germany and my boyfriend is from Canada, for the first months I was always really upset when I asked him if he wanted to do something and he would just say "Sure". For Germans that sounds like there is no interest at all, until I figured out it's completely normal in english to say!
@SnorriSnibble
@SnorriSnibble 8 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, 'sure' sounds a lot more interested than just 'yes'. Like of course he wants to do something and why do you even ask, it's naturally.
@BlaideBlack

For me, and some other german friends who had the exact same issue as me it just sounds like there is no excitement behind it. It's more like an "Of course!" or "Yea that sounds nice". I think we just need to hear that he wants too and not just trust him with it. By now I'm fine with it, but at first it was really off putting for me.

In english there may be several meanings to short comments like nice and sure based upon the tone of voice used and context. Saying nice for an unfavorable outcome in english is sarcasm.p but otherwise could mean good.

The hardest part of talking to a German man as an American is that it's impossible to tell a joke. I once told a joke to a German man, and he took me very seriously, until he finally asked, "are you being saracasm?" Lol

In addition to business trips, my wife and I travel to the U.S. At least two times per year. ,after several decades of being married to this British person, I still find it amazing that she is convinced that Americans do not know how to make a "proper" cup of tea! She still must pack and take her own tea when we go to the States, and simply asks for a pot of hot water and milk on the side, making her own tea at the table. In our hotel room she also packs and brings a "kettle" sometimes, depending on whether we travel,to out of the way places where there may not,be a "kettle""in the room. Amazing! But probably equal to my own conviction that England and Europe in general has no idea how to make "proper" ice tea!!!

+Edward Weeden hahahaha 😂 😂 😂 great story, thanks for sharing it. really amazing. One time I made a cup of tea for a British woman and she was shocked at how good it was. And I was then shocked at how in the world she could be shocked at my ability to make tea. I was thinking to myself "well, you just heat up some water, put tea bag in, you asked for milk, so I put in some milk too....doesn't seem that complicated." Apparently I had no idea...look back on it now, I guess she had given me the biggest compliment in the world and I didn't realize it!

German here, with a russian girlfriend. The most notable difference to german girls is, when going to a restaurant, cinema, whereever, she is exspecting for me to pay for us both, because otherwise she feels disrespected as a woman, like beeing treated like a man. German girls, on the contrary, often feel disrespected when you try to pay for them: It makes them feel like you want to "buy" them. Weird :-D

I'm American and my boyfriend's parents are from Spain but he was raised in Paris. We speak English with each other although its his 3rd language. What I've grown to love about Spanish culture is taking time. Time at lunch or time to sit an a terrace having a drink people watching and having conversation. Not being rushed by the bar or cafe. in the USA the cafe needs to move you along to make more money. I do love that he has taught me to slow down. Americans do not have time. Time is money.

I'm American, and my boyfriend is from Switzerland. One of my hobbies is learning languages and since being together my German and French have tremendously improved. When visiting Europe with him, it's opened my eyes about how their culture is better about recycling and not being wasteful like we tend to be in the U.S. It's inspired me to change my water usage habits and start a compost. He embraces a lot of American culture, but I remind him not to become too Americanized :)

Cool to hear that your experiences in Europe have made you more environmentally friendly! :) Yeah, I think it's really great when people can "swap" cultures...each person learns some of the better things from the other culture, and in the end (hopefully...ideally), both people are better because of the exchange.

I am a good bit older than most of the folks here. I am American and my husband is from the Philippines. We met while serving in the US Navy in Japan. We have been married for 35+ years and still find differences to work out. While dating, most of out dates were surrounded by other friends, very few were just the two of us. When we became engaged he sent special gifts to my parents and frequent flowers to my mother. Child raising was very different. The American way is teaching children to be independent and the Filipino way is to keep children dependent. Lots of other things but I would need more room!

My ex husband (Mexican, I'm American) and I had several arguments about lending money. In the USA, it is not the norm to just loan friends or even family money. One might borrow a few dollars if they need cash, but aren't carrying any (since cash is slowly becoming extinct). In Mexico, it is very common to loan money and I'm not just talking $10 to friends and family. We fought about this so much. In many cultures it is acceptable or even expected that the kids will take care of the parents once the kids start their career, but in the US, most budgets will only take care of your own household, not enough to also care for your parents.
@sushimaya5691
@sushimaya5691 7 жыл бұрын
Jenny Nicole . Yes, that is what Mexicans do, actually never pay back, if they don't have the money, it should not be a big issue, but not all people are like that. Regarding, taking care the parents that should be a responsibility for any child here in USA, Japan, China, any place in the world, it should not be an issue or discussion to take care your vulnerable old parents.

I'm German, my fiancé is Nigerian. When he first approached me, he was also very straight forward, asked a lot of questions and made it very clear that he was interested in dating me. As Trixi said, German guys aren't usually like that. And of course the language. We mostly speak German (or denglish), so he can improve his German, and there have been a lot of times when we argued about something only to find out that one of us didnt understand the other one right. He and his family are also a lot more religious than my family. On new year's eve, instead of going outside and watching the fireworks, 20 people were standing in the living room praying which I found very strange.

One day, I was chatting with someone and chatting in English was new for me (I am German) and at the start of that conversation she wrote "asl" and I was like "wtf" bc I didnt know that short form so I googled and found out that "asl" means "Age Sex Location" but (Now comes the great *But* xD) what I didnt know was that "sex" means "gender" or something like that so I thougt she asked me if I wanted sex so I answered her "14, No and Germany". That was 2 years ago and I was 13 (I lied to her, sorry xD). I'm was shocked until we (my class) talked about human rights in the English lessons; specificly *Equal of the sexes.* That was 2 months ago. And i still feel stupid 😐 xD (Sorry for the grammar mistakes if there are some. I'm not a native English speaker but I try to improve my skills :3)

It was a student exchange and I was kinda afraid, so I said barely nothing the first days, so when my host mother asked e.g. "How was your first day at school?" I was just like "okay" because I didn't wanna say anything wrong and it was also kinda hard to understand my teachers because they (of course) talked kinda fast. American married to a Russian here. He's very old fashioned, won't let me carry the groceries or anything he deems "too heavy" for me. For a strong-willed and independent woman, that's difficult for me, but I understand where he's coming from. It's also a thing to take your shoes off at the door with Russians. I set up a shoe rack in the entry way for him. He's got the old fashioned romance going on as well and it seems pretty common among Russian men. Also very protective of me but not in a creepy way. He's not used to having to drive everywhere and we live in the middle of nowhere so it's absolutely necessary to drive even for groceries. He's still getting used to random people waving to us or saying hi when we walk at the park. Small talk isn't something he is interested in and people like to do that here. Right now he does a lot of our cooking. From scratch...when I say from scratch I mean within the first month of his stay with me in the states, he bought a meat grinder. He won't buy pre-ground meat. He also won't use any of those meal in a box things, he says it's "cheating". I have to say, I don't think I've eaten so healthy and cheaply in my entire life. It's ok though, he's quite the cook. Our relationship is a hodge podge of cultures and I think it's awesome.

Hey Dana! I absolutely love your videos :) I don't know if you still take questions for your 'Ask an American' series, but I was wondering if you ever saw a tornado or hurricane when you still lived in the US. If yes, what was it like? Whenever I see a video or documentary about tornados or hurricanes I see there are a lot of wooden houses or houses directly on the beach. Do you know why that is? I find it very strange that you would built a wooden house if there are tornados every year or built your house on the beach when hurricanes will distroy it in a couple of hours.

I'm currently in a relationship with a japanese guy, while I'm from Germany. One big issue (that is actually being talked about in soo many KZbin channels ;)) is how we talk about our feelings and show love (espesically in public). Sometimes it's quite hard for me to accept, that it's just not common for him to say "I love you" in every possible occasion, to kiss in public etc. On the other hand, he's one of the most respectful, kind and always helping people that I know and comparing each others cultures and languages is super interesting for me. So in my experience sometimes it's super tough, while it's also so worth it! :)

+Isa bella thanks for sharing your experiences! interesting to hear about the differences. I've noticed that, generally speaking, in Germany people seem to be a little bit more comfortable with public displays of affection (kissing/making out in public) than in the U.S. In the U.S. there's the well known phrase "get a room!" for when people are kissing a little to much in public.
@2703Bellaa

I didn't know that this was different in the US, that's interesting to hear! And for me it really helps to realise that there is really no "wrong " or "right " way to show your love to someone,especially if sometimes it seems so much easier to judge from your own point of view and from the culture you grew up in. But that's probably also a positive thing of being in a multicultural relationship, to learn that. .. at least it's for me! So thanks for the interesting video about this topic :)

I actually had an experience with opening windows exactly the other way around. I'm German and my Canadian wife was really confused when I ripped open all windows of my appartment in winter. I explained it's to let fresh air in so no mildew grows on the walls. In Canada, she explained, their heating system is a built in fan in the floor which makes opening windows unnecessary (especially in winter... Brrrrrrr). I prefer the Canadian way :)

I'm American and my husband is German. We used to live in Berlin, but are now in the UK (where we BOTH get to be foreigners! Wee!). One of the trickiest culture clashes for us is air conditioning/fans. It's not as big an issue now that we're in temperate England, but when we were suffering through stifling summers in Berlin, I was dying for some AC or at least an oscillating fan to help me sleep at night (Southern California girl here). Meanwhile my husband cannot stand the noise or cold air of either of those options! He was sweet enough to buy me a stand-up AC with a long hose to go out the window, but it predictiably proved to be rather ineffective - other than in driving him away from our bed to the living room with its jet-like engine noise. Ah well. Glad we're in the UK now. Thanks for the fun video! :-)

Kazoos a! I certainly understand about being a foreigner here in England. I am from the States and married a British citizen over there. After retiring from my corporate job, we moved to the U.K. Sixteen years ago. My business life here is much more relaxed, and the schools are much better/safer for our kids (now grown). But according to my Brit wife, I still can't speak English properly. I just shrug and reply that I am a foreigner and speak American! LOL
@Kazooka
@Kazooka 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Edward! Oh yes, I too feel acutely aware of my linguistic deficits in comparison to Brits (well, most Brits anyway). My wonderfully English-fluent German husband has the sort of accent that is often mistaken for British when amongst Americans (though Brits can always tell he's foreign), but lately he's been taking on my Americanisms like "garbage" "truck" and "pants" -- much to his chagrin! What fun it is to ruin the spouse! :-)
@edwardweeden2834
@edwardweeden2834 8 жыл бұрын
For Kazooka again (and Trixi if you are listening). Never sell yourself short - I am sure you don't anyway! This is particularly true in the language area. You are not ruining your spouse . . . I think the phrase you should be using is "enriching" your spouse, making him even more multi lingual (insert smiling emoji here...)! On a very weird note, when I am not identified as an American here in the U.K. I am almost always mis-identified as a Canadian. That is understandable because of Canadian English being pronounced much like American English (would love to read a book on that if there is one). My fiancé is Korean and we both communicate in either English or Chinese ( we met in China during a year as exchange students, we are both Sinology major) and for me when I'm in Korea, I really had to get used that PDA is a no-no. We can hold hands, but if I want to give him a little peck, I can feel he is uncomfortable. Whereas in Germany he also had problems with shops closing on Sunday's and food being expensive. Besides this, there are no major misunderstandings and we are both really happy to have found each other! ^_^

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences :) Interesting to hear about PDA being a no-no in Korea. I would say, in general, people in German seem to be a little more comfortable with PDA than (in general) people in the US. In the US there's the common phrase "get a room!" for people who are being a little too affectionate. Wish you both all the best together :)

I always close all the windows when I leave the house because of burglars or in case of a thunderstorm. Isn't it a bit reckless to leave them open? In the morning we always do "Stoßlüften" and will open all the windows to let the fresh air in. During the day it depends on how hot it is outside. I do hear "Es zieht!" a lot though.

American here, I lived in southern Germany for about ten years and had many interesting cultural things happen. One of the fumiest and quick to tell is this: In the german language the verb to get or receive is 'Bekommen'. This sounds a lot like the English 'become'. On more than one occasion outside of clubs girls have asked me if I could help them 'become' a taxi!

I am from the United States and I lived in Finland for an exchange in high school. I loved going from walks at night in the winter because the cold felt soooo nice. I found that my Finnish family would be very worried about me catching cold because of the air. This also happened because I didn't keep my room very hot. I was welcome to use the space heater in there but I preffered the feeling of cold. It was quite strange to me. They thought I would catch a cold from cold air, but I didn't get sick. Colds come from bacteria, not the temperature of the air.
@anika4692
@anika4692 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, that is true and false at the same time. Cold DO come from bacteria, but the thing is, that when our body gets cold (temperature falls), it is more vulnerable to diseases. That is why it is common to think that you might catch a cold in cold weather.

Dating & relationships: Canadians - oops, I mean English Canadians - are really reserved. Americans wear their hearts on their sleeves. I am an American who moved to Canada many years ago. After I met my wife in the USA in 2007, on our first date we told each other some very personal things about each other right away. That would not have happened between two English Canadians. But her mother was from France and my father was from Germany. Sometimes when we don't understand each other, don't agree or just get out of sync with each other I think it's her mother battling it out with my father.

My girlfriend lives in Dubai and is here in Germany to study. She really wondered: Why, I like it to sleep at night with an open window, even in winter!" I explained her that I do that since childhood because as a child I have been told: "Your sleep will be better, because the fresh air is good for the regeneration of the cells of your body. And you will feel refreshed." And it is true that I feel better in the morning. But my girlfriend had a hard time to deal with it, because I winter the too gets cold and sometimes I shut the window during the night so she wouldn't have to get up freezy.

Idk if my experience is as multicultural as urs but my family has russian migration background and i was raised very "russian" and my boyfriend is like this typical bavarian guy. Even if we both speak german and both are raised here, we have so many differencies in cultural things. Often we fight about it and sometimes its very funny, for example when him and i have dinner with my family and they all speak in russian and than randomly my bf is replying to some random russian sentence in german or sometimes with russian words he caught up during the conversations. On the other hands some family members of me use russian for their advantage and talk bad about my bf infront of him :/ this makes me sad, but i'm trying to tell these famil members that this is not okay. It is also sometimes really hard for him to fit in or to understand why i view certain things different because of my cultural background. But as far as now we are together since two years and were working on things, that are difficult sometimes to make them better in the future. ^^

I'm German and my husband is Irish. We didn't have any language issues that I can think of. He occasionally laughs about my use of reflexive verbs, and I about his silly pronunciation of practically everything German. The biggest differences are when it comes to houses, renting and owning. For example, most Irish houses have air vents. I'll never get it. Most German houses have a cellar, something my husband will never understand. There's a lot around food, alcohol and money that is different too, so there's often need for discussion. But he have started to be more like, yeah whatever....it's different...and move on.

Well Aussies and Americans both tend to be pretty open in conversation, so when my Aussie husband and I (a "Yank", as they say) started dating, there weren't so many communication problems, but there were a few cultural ones. Like, the biggest one was that he expected girls to be in a more traditional role, but I was this independent american female backpacking around the world alone, unafraid of adventure (like you!) Another cultural difference was that he expected girls to just WATCH the men play sports. I said in America we WOMEN play sports, and sometimes the men watch US! hahahaha (not to imply that women don't play sports in other countries)

Ben Schmidt well, there is no formal way. if you like someone, you will try and spend more time with them and then eventually tell them that you like them. or most of the times, I guess, you somehow end up together. many couples don't even know a date for their anniversary, because it often develops slowly into a relationship.
