Absolute pleasure to listen to this whole exchange. Pilot and all of the controllers were professional, helpful, and situationally aware throughout. Doesn't get any better than that. Wonder if that pilot is looking at a GPS upgrade now 🤣

That's how it's supposed to work. Wise to take a minute to get set up and excellent support from ATC.

I've been on 360JH with its owner Keith. He's the owner of PilotEdge, an ATC simulator for use with X-Plane and MSFS and I'm sure others. I clicked as soon as I saw that blue Lancair in the thumbnail but I'm sure whatever happened in this video it was absolutely by the book. I haven't seen Keith for many years but I've known enough pilots to know a great one when I see one. *Edit* - Yep, this is exactly the sort of excellence I expected from a driver of Keith's caliber.

Woah, that's Keith?

@ Yep. He’s owned Lancair 360JH since before the pilot edge days. I loaned him an AMD computer he used to work out some bugs in his software and he gave me a ride around NJ in exchange.

Yep: single pilot, night LIFR is a challenge. I did it a lot out of Teterboro in the '80s and the approach and tower controllers were and are terrific.

Memories, of a flight bag fifty lbs. Filled with charts and plates to who knows where, it's the way we were. Memories, better have that bag well stocked, hand slipping to just what you need....even flashlights if power fails! Could it have been more simple then, perhaps an autopilot, when I got the "leans"...its the way we were. It started on one fateful trip, the tiny plane was tossed. If not courage of the courage of the fearless pilot and helpful ATC, that plane would've been lost. SERIOUSLY, both pilot and especially ATC reacted well, exemplary! Both of them.

Great airmandship and controller. Although perhaps the pilot could've refrained from making the approach at Caldwell and found a good alternate from the get go.
@markdaniel8740Күн бұрын
He was there and conditions change. Watch the DH and be ready for missed. 200' ceiling might work with ILS, but you really can't expect to land on localizer unless there is a break.

As a student pilot this is a relief to hear a stressful situation being professionally handled and not a pilot debrief, this is helpful for me to get an idea of how to handle tasks while talking to atc (granted im going for my ppl not instrument but still)

Single pilot, LIFR, in a slippery single engine piston. That is pretty tough duty, gotta say.

@@untitled6981 His queuing etiquette is impeccable. The only time that he lost his cool was was he had to get the ATIS - - did he he a single frequency radio, or was he using the other channel for something else?

Excellent flight. That's how it should be professional. IFR you cannot land due to minimums, then go into the air, evaluate repeating or going to the alternative with better visibility. Always enough fuel for any detour. Calm and finally on land. I really enjoyed a well-organized flight and good arrival. Thank you very much for the video.

I thought this was going going to be another cranky controller making life hard for a struggling single IFR guy, but no, hats off to this controller. Edit: what’s the go with having one radio in such challenging conditions and airspace?!

Don’t you need two radios to be IFR legal? Maybe one was INOP but that should have been reported, no?
@mfkpКүн бұрын
Sounded like he had two radios, but wasn't aware he could ask the controller to switch off to get ATIS because monitoring both at the same time was too loud.
@livnrluvsngКүн бұрын
Obviously strongly recommended to have two but no, only one is required
@melvinacanworksКүн бұрын
Pilot knew that. Keith is a very well known pilot and does a lot of training online for Pilots Workshop and he did a great job. Perfect comms and asked for what he needed and got that and then helped them out with the speed.
@MickiSelКүн бұрын
He probably has two radios, but if he was tuned in to both frequencies at the same time, it would be impossible for him to be able to hear the ATIS frequency, because of all the chatter on the Newark frequency at the same time.
@rdawgz866Күн бұрын
Listening to 2 frequencies at once is a skill most experienced pilots have, you kinda listen to the atis in one ear while listening for your tail number on the other. That's if your audio panel can do that.

How the heck that some idiot PILOT would actually gamble with these weather conditions...
