Here is a Practical Hack from a long time guitar teacher. Very often, you can substitute an open B7 chord [X B D# A B F#] for the B chord. The B7 chord is easier to play and may sound "better" than a B chord in "certain situations". Try it out as an experiment and see if it "Sounds" better to you.

@Hello_there_obi
@Hello_there_obi Жыл бұрын
@@aleki2904 it makes it sound too bright. And further up the neck it becomes impossible. Using individual fingers is mainly good for sus2 voicings. But for everyday barre chords people should barre with their ring fingers unless they really want a root in as the top note. And this method of playing with three fingers for a “fuller” chord ie having that root on the high e string sounds a bit micky mouse - especially in a mix with other instruments. Having the major third on the b string as the top note by barring with your ring finger sounds more compact and interesting.

@Hello_there_obi
@Hello_there_obi 8 ай бұрын
@@Iesous27 lemme put it this way: it’s the least ideal way. Let’s say you wanted to do a sus4, how will you do that when your pinky is already barring? If you bar with the ring, you can add your pinky for that sus4 embellishment. It limits your options, is more a cumbersome way to play, makes sliding an a-shape bar chord up or down the neck harder and makes transitions from a shapes to g shapes more awkward. Oh and you can’t transition from a bar chord to a power chord or a stacked power chord as cleanly or efficiently. And another thing: hendrix did this trick all the time where he would play an a shape then immediately use the ring to slide up the a string and switch to a g shape with the third being played in the bass by the ring finger on the a string. You can’t do that as smoothly if you bar with the pinky. So yeah, not a good way. Objectively worse in so every regard to the point where it seems retarded. Can’t think of a single upshot of doing it this way.

Yes. When you play a chord with the root note as the lowest note, it's the regular chord, and when the 3rd is lowest its a 1st inversion, and when the 5th is lowest it is 2nd inversion.

I mean…who in their right mind plays the first example like you did with their pinky 😅 Play it with your ring finger folks! Allows you to play a sus 4 by simply adding your pinky on the fret above your ring on the b string and allows you to transition to e shape barre chords with ease as your ringer just needs to become upright on the a string which is next door. Never play it with your pinky either he’s trolling us or canadians have too many screws loose 😂

@@Hello_there_obi 10 years on guitar + audio engineering. They don't sound "better" in a mix because there is no such thing as better. There is a time and place for either one in both your compositions and in a mix. There are other genres that require you to barre the whole chord, so it would suck to be you if you couldn't do it. Btw, even if you barred a chord and high passed the bass notes out, they still wouldn't sound the same as just playing the triads on the higher strings. Context is key.
@Hello_there_obi
@Hello_there_obi Жыл бұрын
@@TakeHit0 then I should clarify what I mean: if you have a lot of instruments playing and you want everything to come through in the mix instead of a garbled wall of sound, less can often be more so generally musicians will play stripped back chords ie triads or even double stops. This stops two instruments from playing the same thing. It depends yes but a lot of the time, playing the same note in the bottom as the bass player isn’t that great. I mean, that’s partly why jazz players use triads and shell voicings right? Whilst in other genres like punk rock, you get more stacking yes. Have you been playing music for as long as you’ve been recording? And secondly I stressed the importance of learning both. Not one over the other.

Yes. For an open A chord just barre with your index and roll off at the first knuckle to mute the high E string. Much simpler and quicker method and it frees your other fingers to add embellishments. When you play A shape barre chords though, use your ring finger to barre the three strings and for the love of god not your pinky like brandon is doing 😂 I sweat he’s trolling us with that one

Yeah they are different alterations and inversions of the chord, which affects the sound and function it produces. More or less it's different shades of the same color. If you want to paint a perfect replica of another painting you would need to use the same exact colors, but if you want to recreate it in your interpretation, or create something new but along a similar style, you can use a wider palette.

Is learning the fretboard in sharps better than flats?
@Hello_there_obi
@Hello_there_obi Жыл бұрын
Look up the circle of fifths and key signitures to understand why we use both. But when navigating the fretboard without a key, if you go up, talk in sharps. If you go down, talk in flats. Heres a quick explanation of when to use sharps and flats in a key: Say you were in the key of G major. The formula for the major scale is : T T ST T T T ST. Where T is a whole Tone (2 frets) and ST is a SemiTone (1 fret). Simple! Now start from G and map out the notes: G A B C D E F#/Gb G T T ST T T T ST NOTE: the accidental (any note that’s a sharp or flat) is either F# or Gb. How do we decide which to use? Use F# as you don’t use the letter G twice. And there you have it. Other keys will use flats to avoid using letters twice.
