I noticed this pattern as well, so I pulled out my paper and realized the pattern still works with some additional steps. However many additional "ones" there are in the 11's number is how many additional times you add all of the numbers together. For example if you're multiplying 8,371 by 111,111 ;you have two additional ones so you're going to add all four numbers together two additional times before descending back and adding only 8+3+7 and so forth. It works with less 1's place values as well. But if you're multiplying by only two ones like an 11, then you're only going to add a maximum of two digits together. So 8,371 * 11 You would have 1 in ones spot 7+1 in 10's spot 3+7 in 100's 8+3 in thousands And 8 in 10 thousand's ( plus the carried over 1) =92,081

Is this trick only for same digit numbers like you multiplied 11(a 2 digit no.) With only 2 digit no. 111(a 3 digit number) with only another 3 digit number. So is this not applicable for problems like 5081(a 4 digit number)×111111(a 6 digit number)?

I noticed this pattern as well so I pulled out my paper and I tried it myself. If the digits are not equal (like thousands x thousands: 8,371 x 1,111= 9,300,181) and instead it's 8,371 * 11,111 (or 1 extra place value of the 11's) The additional step you need to take is to add all four numbers together a second time before decending back to adding just the 8+7+3 and so forth. If you have 2 extra 11's place values (multiplying by 111,111.... You would add 8+3+7+1 together 3x before decending down. However many additional "ones" you put in the 11 # is how many more times you add all # together. The same rule applies reverse. So 8,471 * 11, With the number 11 there are only two ones. Which means the most amount of numbers you're going to add together are 2 digits. So 1 in 1 column, 7+1 in 10's 4+7 in hundreds 8+4 in thousands and 8 for the 10 thousand place. (plus the 1 carried over) = 93,181
