FANTOM is a new kind of creative hub, where you can pull together all the sounds and inspiration around you into one music production environment. And it keeps growing and evolving with new sounds, features, and refinements based on customer feedback.
Building on the recent additions of multiple SuperNATURAL sound engines and a stunning 32-band stereo vocoder, FANTOM now takes another giant leap forward with version 2.0. The free update includes major enhancements to FANTOM’s sampling, sequencing, effects, and routing capabilities, and new ways to make FANTOM the center of your creative universe.
In this video, Mark Watson takes you through some of the new features of FANTOM v2.0. Use these links to jump ahead to learn more about the features that interest you most:
00:00 FANTOM Version 2.0 Overview
01:38 New Sampling Features
02:24 Sampling to Keyboard
03:17 Sampling Keyboard and Input
04:04 Sampling the Vocoder
05:13 Multisampling
07:55 New Sequencer Edit Tools
08:52: TFX (Total Effects) Processor
09:42 Pad Sampler Routing, Zoom Edit, More Output Routing
10:05 New Scene Chain Markers
10:20 Zone Advanced Control and Zone Transpose
11:27 Increased Aftertouch Sensitivity and Touchscreen Wallpaper
The sampling engine gets a radical overhaul in version 2.0, with the ability to sample directly to the keyboard or to build detailed multisamples up to 352 samples per tone. Keyboard samples and multisamples can be edited on board and used as the basis of any oscillator/partial in a ZEN-Core tone. With four oscillators per tone and up to 16 tones in a Scene, the sound design potential is mind-bending.
In addition to other audio routing enhancements, FANTOM’s master section now has a TFX (Total Effects) processor. Along with the already-equipped master compressor and EQ, the TFX processor can add any of its 90 effects to FANTOM’s master output. And now you can use effects on input, and even sample the result!
Sequencing continues to take advantage of FANTOM’s high-resolution touchscreen. You can now draw and edit automation using multiple gestures, and the new microscope mode lets you fine-tune each note to perfection.
Each of FANTOM’s 16 zones can already be assigned to an internal sound or an external input or software synthesizer. Now, each zone can be set to both for truly epic sounds! You can even transpose each zone independently and save the settings in a Scene.
And speaking of Scenes, you can now visualize your Scene Chains in a list and easily swap their places. You can even jump around your Scene Chain using handy markers.
Finally, version 2.0 lets you change the touchscreen background to match your mood or creative space.

waiting for linear sequencing to come in an update. that would really just set this workstation over the top!! hoping to see that in a future update! pattern recording is alright but not everyone uses that for their workflow. i used mix time signatures and not so much looped beats and samples. Would be great to see

This stuff really should have been ready to go at release, but then, I'm not up on how hard it is to develop an OS with so many features. It's just that Roland has done it with SO MANY great workstations before. Still, putting it on market early was a good call, I'd rather have a new synth than not have a new synth. It's not mine yet, but someday...

Please make it easier to chop samples and add the slices to the same sample map. For the entire sample including slices, please add real-time time stretch (auto-bpm match) and real-time pitch shifting that doesn't change the length of the sample when playing up and down the keyboard. NOW, The Trinity seems like THE annoying plastic recorder you get when you 1st start Band in the 6th grade. Lol oh God, they keep getting better, damn it. PS - the Trinity DID bring out the best in my composing for a 23 year old. STILL GOT A CASSETTE TAPE OR TWO FOR PROOF (TRUE). I Remember getting the sheet score for "bastians happy flight" from the movie NeverEnding Story and made it sound 90% like Klaus Doldinger and Giorgio Moroder did on the soundtrack. Hello Thank you for the very educational presentation of this new version 2.0! I have several important questions for you: 1: Apparently, it is possible to correct the "false notes" in the sequencer; Is that true? And is this possible in all Fantom recording modes? (all tracks , of course !) 2: Also, can I record a 8-minute song (..) with a single or a layer ? (So by directly recording what I play in the sequencer from a chosen sound, as I do with my Kronos..) ? 3: On the synths I already have, I create MY sounds; with the Fantom, is there enough space to memorize sounds that I will create? (single, layers..) 4: Are there other sound banks for the Fantom? If, where? Thank you for answering me whenever you want. I don't want to buy the Fantom without these details. With respect. Pierrot ps : this com is very serious .

I have a Fantom 88 key ordered through my local Guitar Center. It should be in sometime in January, possibly February. Being the fact that Roland is behind in getting new Fantoms out to stores on a regular basis, the ones that do get shipped are most likely quite new in being built. Now with that being said, when I get mine in early 2023, will the newer ones come with the new, updated version already installed out of the box, or will I get an original version and have to update it myself?

@@gorsignups Guy: I currently use a Motif as my master keyboard, and that sequencer has 16 sections of 16 parts, all of which have a measure limit of 99: the Fantom has 8 sections of 16 parts, with a 32 measure limit for all sections: this is quite a difference..Also: Fantom only allows couple of time signatures, whereas, Motif, has every single time signature there is....you see, when you are creating traditional ( pop hits of the 60s -90s ) music, for the most part, you need all that extra parts and measure, etc.....when you are doing the type of sequencer songs that you see on most demo videos of the Fantom, there are endless repeatable patterns, so, looping supersedes number of measures....

@@gorsignups update on this: through various software versions, Roland has doubled the amount of measures per pattern, and most importantly, they now allow all possible time signatures.....this is a major improvement. I got a fantastic deal on a used unit and now own this beast. The user interface is unquestionably the best in the workstation market right now.....I am spending a ton of time trying to learn it properly before I commit it to being my master keyboard. The sounds are full and excellent. Closest to this now is the Korg Nautilus, which, although still has a lot of the serpentine user interface problems that Korg has, also has some of the best sounds that are out there in a stand alone keyboard.

I doubt it will have linear sequencing anytime soon as this generation is more used to Clip based sequencing. My hope is that they will extend the limit from 32 bars to some useful value. As for your mulitsamples I doubt it will work as the New fantom has a different sound file format. If you can make it into a Soundfont format then the converter which Mark told is coming might help.

So, that after recording i can trigger the vocal samples from the pad sampler in realtime sequence from the pads in time with the sequencer backing tracks?

@@digitaria6574 Try it. Set the sampler to record from external and start the sequencer and see what happens. I recommend to use headphones than using speakers to prevent your mic from taking the sound from the sequencer. I have not tried this but is a theory.

Will test theory next time i vist the music instruments retailer. Was exited when i heared Roland had just released the Fantom. After reading the spec and viewing a few youtube video's i saw, no audio tracks, very limited weak sampler pad section, i was completely put off it. What is everyone's opinion on Fantom 7 or 8. My current needs are at home recording, also using VSTs, but would eventually like to get back into playing live. Would lugging Fantom 8 to gigs be best, or a Fantom 7, then have an 88 MIDI controller for piano sounds from the Fantom? I assume that can be done? Have a full 88 MIDI controller, assign it to Grand Piano, and leave it be, and then use the Fantom 7 itself for all my synth while live playing? Or should I go with an 88, and use a 76-MIDI controller for all my synth sounds? I currently have a Korg Triton LE 88 and Roland Juno-Stage. I would lug both to live gigs all the time, so keyboard weight is not an issue. Pain in the ass? Yes, but not an issue.
@ablesam
@ablesam 3 жыл бұрын
I will give you a few opinions that might benefit as options. 1. The Fantom 8 is 28 kg and almost 10 kg more than your Triton le. So my first opinion would be buying a Fantom 7 and using the Triton as a Midi controller and also a sound source for your gigs. 2. The Fantom 8 has a ivory/ebony feel that makes playing it a lot of fun. Also the action is amazing as it is not too heavy but not too light. Somewhere in the middle I'd say. So if you want excellent piano action and do not worry about weight, then you can go for the Fantom 8. 3. Buy a Fantom 7 and find a midi controller with excellent action (and options) and use it with the Fantom. It would be also good if the midi controller in bus powered. But not necessarily.
@KevboKev
@KevboKev 3 жыл бұрын
@@ablesam Thank you very much for your thoughts on this. I know no one can decide my final decision for me, but I like getting others' perspectives on these matters. Yes, the Triton LE with the case I have makes it weight close to 70 lbs. I wonder how 86 lbs would feel when playing LIVE. However, with COVID, and no sign of things getting back to normal, I'm not sure I will be gigging anytime soon. I also have two small children, one very sickly, so it may be a good five years until I'm out playing again, at least! I really do want the feel of a better weighted keybed than then Triton LE offers. I really liked the feel of the Roland Fantom G8 keybed, so I'd imagine the Fantom 8 feels just as great, if not better. My other thought, similar to your option 3 was getting a Fantom 7, but then also getting the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol s88 mkii as my MIDI controller. I also use Kontakt here in my home studio a lot with different VSTs, so I thought that would be a nice one to have. However, I guess that would only really be relevant if I ever plan on playing out again. I'm trying to debate what would be a bigger pain in the butt: 1) Lugging all the heavy equipment if I do play out if I got a Fantom 8, or 2) Having to continually route the sounds I want from the Fantom down to my MIDI controller just while playing at home. It's probably easier than I'm making it out to be, but man, so many thoughts. It would be more expensive to buy the Fantom 7 and the S88 mkii over just getting the Fantom 8. My Juno-Stage has excellent synth action, and I love playing leads on it, so I can always use that as my MIDI controller for synths. Arrrggggggghhhhhh.......so much to think about! haha But you gave me some good thoughts to think about, too, so thank for you that. :-)

Does anybody know if Roland fixed the pitch wheel speed problem, with it not being fast enough? And with saving tones into patterns, is there any way to save patterns without having to save sounds into user slots? I don't know why for the life of me why Roland would do such a thing. When you make a pattern, you want to save it, and be able to go back to those same settings, without worrying about having to rewrite the same sound with different effects, then the pattern from before with that same sound, will be overwritten forever. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please, your feedback helps. One more thing, does anyone know of some really quality drum kits or drum expansions to get from Roland or the Cloud Manager?...SBN RESONATE

I believe this Instrument was for newer generations in terms of sequencing and not linear sequencing. My best option if you want to record linear in a Keyboard would be the Fantom G. It is a powerhouse of a sequencer. The New Fantom is beats the Fantom G in terms of sound and hardware and connectivity. But the Fantom G is more true to the name of workstation.

The Internal Storage is 2 GB. Thats what the Roland site says. The current built-in loops take around 90-95 mb and depending on what expansions you downloaded that I might estimate to 800 mb you might have 1.1 gb for sampling.

@ablesam
@ablesam 3 жыл бұрын
@@WildernessMusic_GentleSerene I am not a professional pianist sir. I have performed with Grand Pianos and Upright Pianos for Concerts back when I was in school and also play in churches and for Events if they need a pianist/keyboardist. I play by ear and to me personally so far few companies have achieved a natural piano tone. Software Pianos have achieved even far greater results but with the limations of being hosted by a computer and is subject to crashes and other problems. To me brands such as Nord, Dexibell, Roland have been my top experiences when playing piano. The CP300 from Yamaha is quite heavy but has a solid wooden action and a decent piano sound. I have always tweaked my sound to my liking via EQ and tone parameters offered by the instrument. So I can only give you my opinions sir. Personally I find the Fantom's V-Piano needs to be tweaked to get my desired sound. There are few favorites of mine which are EastCoast Studio and Contemporary Concerto. These are modeled Pianos inside the Fantom which I tend to use as they sound great by default.

@@ablesam Thank you, that was very helpful. I did not think the digital is ready to replace the acoustic yet. But I do purchase new technology when I think it better than I have today. I have been using a Yamaha P95 since its introduction, it is an okay Dpiano, but lacking in long decays and sympathetic string resonance of acoustics. I am a synth sound designer and audio engineer so the tweaking is welcome and not a fear, the more parameters the better.

have you tried moving the usb stick to a different usb accessory port like 2 or 3? I didn't have any issue updating I followed the update process here. PROCEDURE FOR THE UPDATE Caution You must not rename the extracted files. Never turn off the FANTOM-6 / FANTOM-7 / FANTOM-8's power while the update is in progress. Creating the Update USB Memory Copy all files inside the "fantom678_sys_v200" folder to the USB flash memory's root directory (the level displayed immediately after opening the device). Update Procedure Connect the USB Memory to the USB MEMORY port. Hold down the [ WRITE ] button and turn on the power. The message "preparing for update..." appears at the top of the display, and the initial update starts. * Continue to hold down the [ WRITE ] button until "preparing for update..." appears on the display. * The update operation takes about 2 minutes. After confirming that the message "Update (board1) End..." has been displayed, detach the USB flash memory without turning off the power. * Do not turn off the power. Connect the USB flash memory to any one of the EXT DEVICE jacks (1, 2, or 3). The message "Running Update..." appears at the bottom of the display, and the update starts again. * The update requires about 5 minutes. After confirming that the message "Update (board2) End..." has been displayed, turn off the power. Detach the USB Memory from the FANTOM-6 / FANTOM-7 / FANTOM-8. This completes the update operation. The new system program runs at the next startup. Follow the procedure for verifying the version to verify that the version has been updated.

To my humble opinion, these Fantoms priority is more on features than it is on usability and sound quality. I own a Fantom G7 which has an excellent built-in sequencer which allows me to record linear, like a musician would like to do. Making patterns and having to organize them into order?? It doesn't make sense to me. Who makes music that way? Also, knowing Roland a little, they never update to a mature product. The FantomG is a nice workstation, but Roland failed to update the firmware to fix serious issues. They just abandon the product. For instance, midi-automation on audio tracks just isn't there. And the mixer lacks the 'solo' feature, where you can mute all but one track. While this was an existing feature on there older Fantom X. Same with the Integra-7. There are some serious issues with this module, but Roland just won't address them. I would think twice before purchasing this Fantom, knowing that Roland will let you down eventually and abandon the product.
