The surface pro just arrived today. The reason I did this first is so that I could show her an iPad (which I'm giving to her and my dad) and show her why a surface pro is better and fixes the problems she had with the iPad. I will do an unboxing of the surface pro in 2 hours and upload it in 8 hours. In 48 hours I will upload an osfirsttimer video of my mum try out windows 8 pro on the surface pro.

But parallels mobile for ipad is a Remote Desktop app that allows you to remotely access virtual pc's running on a desktop pc. Windows or mac won't actually be running natively on ipad and can't since it uses an arm processor.

It's the pro. Australia doesn't have them so I had one imported from another country. It took 3 weeks to arrive.

But the laptop does t last long in that state and the ipad practically never has to be turned off. That's why I compared it like that because my mum turns her laptop off all the time but with the ipad there is no need. Unless of course you need to reboot while jailbreaking.

Yes you can suspend the pc but the battery won't last as long while its suspended. Also it's a slower process to wake a computer up from being suspended than it is to simply open an iPad up.

Her laptop doesn't have much battery power so she can't leave it on all day long and open it when she likes. The iPad however is light and convenient and can do that. I've had the iPad in a state like that for a week and its still been running without being charged.

Not all of the apps in the multitasking tray are open. When you close out of an app, it stays running for a couple of seconds and then closes on its own. The app tray is for recently used apps. That's why the apps have the loading screen even if you don't close out of them, unless you exited the app fairly recently.

Ios6 on iPhone has a calculator but the default iOS 6 for ipad has no calculator unless you get one from the App Store.

in the beginning it seems you were mixing the quick "boot" of the ipad compared to the laptop, but in my opinion, you shouldn't praise the ipad just for shutting down the screen and going into standby, laptops can do that too with same results also note that laptop is older than the tablet

right now if you want to install an app on your Apple products you have to click on get and then what you only have to do is to use Apple pay there's a screen that says use touch ID or use face ID or if you don't have those I think it will show a screen of enter password or something

It has probably been asked before but can you have your mum have a go on a chromebook (chrome os). This time give your mum a set of written tasks, like the the usual ones, an hour time limit to complete them, set the camera to watch her work and you leave the room. Give her NO assistance or clues. I want my mum to start using computers and I'm planning on getting a chrome book for her, I think a tablet might even be a tad complex (she's in her 70's!) Your videos are a cool experiment.

iPad doesn't have the Calculator app installed by default? When I compare the homescreen of my iPhone to that of your iPad I don't see Videos, Weather, Stocks, Calculator, Compass (which makes sense if the iPad doesn't have GPS) and Sound Recorder. I didn't know so many apps were missing from the iPad. I always thought the apps that are installed on the iPhone are also installed on the iPad.

Tablets are great, but try "Sleep" for the laptop. Mine laptop turns on in 3 seconds and is ready to go, using battery also about 1% per hour. Soooo... Yhea.. :) Both are fantastic machines.

Out of interest, how come your mum's Win XP took so long to boot and go into the browser? Even one of my old laptops from 2003 (IBM Thinkpad G40) will boot Win XP SP3 with Chrome etc in under a minute; 25secs to reach the desktop and then a few secs for the browser. I do have plenty of additional applications installed for office, audio and video etc.

Personally, I don't think that your mum would like Android that much since it is not so simplistic. She would probably appreciate the navigation bar at the bottom, however, with a back button especially. For someone like her, I would actually recommend iOS, although I am an 100% Android guy.
