As an urban planner, I'm more interested in pedestrian zones, cycle lanes and public transportation. City looks vibrant with these spaces and not wide desolate highways where cycling and walking becomes dangerous. Common man must not necessarily need a car to move around the city, public transportation, bicycle lanes and walkable zones make living more comfortable, affordable and far more efficient. For example, 6:06 look how vibrant this looks as when compared to say 14:10 14:47 where vehicles occupy everything.

See there are many landmarks in Bengaluru that are not clean other than MG road and Sadashivnagar. I live here and I know how dirty the city is. Especially in my landmark there are no proper roads over here which we really need, and the government is not doing anything. Two of my friends live in Mumbai, and they said that there are proper roads and city is clean. Why can’t Bengaluru develop??

@@imfriedchicken Mumbai just could not position itself as an international finance center or a hub of corporate companies (especially banks and exporters), mainly due poor law and order, highly corrupt governance, self inflicted wounds like regionalism, lack of quality education institutes (to this day), encroaching slums leads to unnecessarily high real estate costs (which no one wants to pay) which drove away high paying jobs like IT services. Cities like Jakarta prospered by being open to international businesses, governing reasonably well, getting rid of slums which add to real estate costs, having much better law & order and overall peace.Plus the SE Asian model of exports and borrow a lot to build also played a big role. I really think Mumbai has missed the boat by stupidly catering to corrupt politics, regionalism, swarming the city with tons of poor people (aka vote bank)who just take from the city and give nothing back to it. The corrupt politics, poor law & order, and regionalism are the main culprits. One only needs to look at Hyderabad to see the stark difference in governance approach. RIP, Mumbai.

Indian politicians have too much power and they invariably use it to destroy wealth creation, entrepreneurship and promote corruption, crony capitalism, stupidity, superstitions, bad governance etc. Parts of these cities can prosper but to become like an East Asian city, the population needs to have much more human development, become more practical, less religious and more educated, willing to work (and not rely on freebies) to earn a living etc. South India followed by the west contribute the highest GDP to India on a per capita basis. But southern states are falling into the same bad freebie culture, criminal-politician nexus, excessive government interference, bad law & order that the poorer northern states have. Unless the criminalized politics change in Indian states and cities becoming great at electing highly educated mayors and councils to govern and frame policies along with a built-in capacity to raise municipal funds backed by strong tax revenues, there is really no hope. Indian cities are junk rated on borrowing capacity (due to bad tax policies, excessive freebie culture, bad governance, corruption, general backwardness etc.) and therefore cannot raise their own revenues to finance infrastructure and growth. Until this situation changes, Indian cities cannot ever compete with their Asian counterparts. Jut compare Chennai to Singapore and Hyderabad to Kuala Lumpur. Chennai and Hyderabad are capitals of territories that are much bigger than Malaysia and Singapore, yet these cities do not even have 1/10th the living standards of their advanced counterparts. Why? general backwardness of population, lack of entrepreneurship, excessive criminalization of politics, and lack of aspiration to become more developed. So, no I dont see Hyderabad becoming a KL or Chennai becoming a SG ever. It is the mindset and the tolerance of criminalized politics.

We have proven them all wrong time and again. Don't worry, Mumbai will never be in a RIP state. Good luck living in Jakarta where recently there was a major corruption scandal of the municipality that broke out for taking bribes from the Chinese. Good luck living in Bangkok whose economy has gone down the drain due to no tourism due to COVID. Good luck living in KL which has constantly been outperformed by Singapore and has no further development potential due to its presence.
