You are no mumbling professor, you should call yourself Professor Clarity. I have been struggling to get into grips with this hicksian model- you just made it look so simple! Thank you.

I remember when I took a micorecon class, the guy who taught me was smart but had no idea of how to explain and channel it to his students. You clearly demonstrated with this short clip that teaching is an art. Teaching requires a special skil like magic.

as far as your 'Zoomed In" portion of the video goes, holding purchasing power constant would make it so you could afford bundle A. your optimal bundle would change as you shift the slope of your budget constraint. a budget constraint with a new slope would mean the IDC would be tangent at a different point & you're optimum under new prices would change. the difference between your optimal bundle at old prices (A) & new prices (B) would be the actual substitution effect. I don't see how you can claim that you've held purchasing power constant, but make your original bundle unaffordable. i am a student trying to understand the material but it seems as if you are combing Hicks substitution (hold utility constant) & Slutsky substitution (hold purchasing power constant). if i am not understanding this correctly please explain why. Thanks!

Good explanation, buuuuuut it would be good to mention the difference between Hicks and Slutsky....cause IT IS possible that the parallely displaced budget constraint crosses the optimum in A....as long as you draw a new indifference curve for the B, which has to be parallel to the indifference curve of A. That would be the Slutsky substitution and income effect.

if you are holding purchasing power constant why can you not afford the original bundle A that you began with? by remaining on the same indifference curve aren't you holding utility constant, not purchasing power?
