A comparator compares signal strengths from the back and side. If the signal from the back is stronger or equal to the side output, the front will exhibit a strength equal to the strength input for the back. If the signal strength from the back is weaker, it won't exhibit a charge.If you click the comparator and the third redstone torch turns on, it is now in subtract mode. In this case, the strength from the side will be subtracted from the strength from the back, and the remainder will be exhibited out the front. By the way, the end with the two torches is the back. Hope this helps.

I tried to calculate the number of combinations in this. The dropper room alone destroys everything. If I'm correct, that one has 255^105240 combinations. That's 255 with 105240 zeros in front. To help understand the scale, imagine a watching this video on 240p. Each pixel represents a zero. The other rooms by themselves (excluding the rythm room) should merge into 3451961852559360000 (3.45 quintillion) combinations.

Here to do a quick calculation on the amount of possible combinations of the dropper puzzle. First of all. After checking a minecraft id list i am going to assume that the amount of obtainable items in survival is about 500. That gives us 500^3 different item combinations which is 125,000,000 combinations. That is however just the tip of the iceberg. Moving over to the big numbers. Each item has a total of 35 letters (1 of them has 34 but i am going to rule out the possibility of any other amounts of letter to preserve my own sanity calculating this). Mumbo has used every letter in the English alphabet as well as numbers and a few different symbols. There are 26 letters, 10 numbers and about 17 symbols that could potentially be used. That is in total 53 different possible inputs. This gives us the outrageous number of 53^35 or about 2.2369*10^60 as the amount of different combinations each item can have as its name. There are 3 different items which means we need to use the previous number to the power of 3 and then multiply it by the number of different item combinations giving us the equation (2.2369*10^60)^3*125000000 = 1.399*10^189 different combinations 1.399*10^189 is such an outrageously large number that it is really hard to understand just how large it is. I guess some of you have heard the crazy things you would have to do to reach the number of ways a deck of crads can be sorted. (Things like if you counted each step it takes to walk around the earth and then every time you made a lap you take 1 drop of water and put it in a container you would end up draining an ocean before you got to that number) That number is 52! (52 faculty) which equals 8.0658*10^67. You would have to add an entire other deck of cards to the first one to even get close to this number. Please correct me if i have made any mistakes in calculating this and if you really hate yourself try calculating the amount of possibilities if you also do not know the amount of symbols on each item. TLDR: You are not getting past the dropper puzzle. There are more combinations than there are ways to sort a deck of cards with 100 cards in it.
