Giumalau Massif (Giumalau peak, 1857-1858 m) is situated in the northern part of the Eastern Carpathians (Romania) and with its giant dome shape dominates the region of Bucovina. Giumalau Massif is bordered in the east by Rarau Massif (Rarau peak, 1651 m), Colbu saddle (1285 m) making the connection between the two massifs. In the north-west, Putna Creek separate it from Obcinile Bucovinei Mountains. Bistrita River separates to the west, through Dorna Depression, from Suhard Mountains and in the south from Bistritei Mountains. Giumalau Massif is formed from crystalline rocks that also forms the basis of its limy neighbor, Rarau Massif. The flora is formed by mixed forests dominated by spruce, in the lower levels and junipers, bilberries, cranberries and pastures in the upper levels. Fauna consists of brown bears, lynxes, wolves, wild boars, deer and capercaillie.
Munţii Giumalău (vf. Giumalău, 1857-1858 m) și Rarău (vf. Rarău, 1651 m) constituie împreună o zonă turistică de un pitoresc aparte în partea nordică a Carpaţilor Orientali. Sunt străbătuţi de numeroase trasee turistice. Reprezintă o zonă montană cu stâncării, grohotișuri, văii, doline, păduri de conifere, păduri în amestec, pajiști, stepe, pășuni alpine de un deosebit înteres geologic, peisagistic, floristic și faunistic.
Legătura cu masivul Rarău, situat la est, se face prin șaua Fundu Colbului (1285 m). Masivul Giumalău este alcătuit din roci cristaline. Este dominat de o culme centrală cu orientată NV - SE având altitudini mai mari de 1400 m. În partea centrală a crestei se află vârful Giumalău (1857 m) din care se desprind spre vest și sud-vest interfluvii plate acoperite de poieni largi. Ele se termină spre afluenții Bistriței și Putnei prin versanți cu pantă mare. Văile care le separă sunt adânci și cu versanți abrupți. In lungul lor se află numeroase drumuri forestiere și poteci (unele cu marcaje turistice) ce duc spre vârful Giumalău.
