First grade my mom made me gimbap, to me hers are the best and always perfect and pretty. But I’ll never forget this kid who pretended he was interested and asked for a piece and then threw it on the ground yelling “eww gross!” It messed me up for years about eating Korean food in public. All this to say im so thankful for ppl like Eunjo, David Chang and others for introducing the world to our cuisine. Many have come before and many will keep coming…just thankful for some respect and representation.

Hey I’m so sorry you had to go through this, but also proud that things are changing. I had a similar experience and the harasser went on to eat his pickled eggs in the cafeteria I laughed it off at the end of it. BUT I don’t want my children to experience this as I will try my best to pass on my heritage and culture. Hope everyone can feel the same way :)
@cliffc36733 жыл бұрын
relate to this story real hard. If I'm honest, i'm a little bitter about the popularity of korean food only bc there are a ton of people who pretend they've loved it all along and preach on about authenticity yadda yadda. I wouldn't be surprised if that mean kid in your class is one of the aforementioned people now. Pettiness aside, it feels nice to not be on the defensive while eating basic ass shit like kimbap or japchae (or anything).
@Rirruto3 жыл бұрын
For some reason I'd like to think that kid might still remember this same exact moment and regrets ever doing it eating them up inside
@Brandon-ei3vo3 жыл бұрын
wow thats so crazy! i had a similar experience where i was in 7th grade and i brought gimbap for lunch, and some kid kept dumped his pudding all over my food. I was so angry i punched him in the face and got suspended. My principal told my father that i am lucky to be asian and not a black or a-rab.

@@JH-bb8in Pretty sure you're wrong. I was introduced to gimbap in high school - some of my Korean classmates would eat it in their dorm rooms as a snack, I vividly remember sitting on the floor with my friend Michelle, using the seaweed in our hands as a little mitt to scoop some microwaved rice out of the container, and adding a squirt of Sambal - a very 'low maintenance' gimbap, lol. It's been too long!

Let her be regular at Munchies. I really liked her explanations overall. Yes, there is no sugar added to the rice in gimbap, and you'll be indeed surprised how much sugar goes into sushi rice. Gimbap, in my opinion, has a unique flavor and taste that harmonize with a variety of fillings (typically at least 4-5 different fillings).
