This video is a 2nd and final part of a video I did on a Muncie that ran out of oil, seized up and blew up the gearset. It was a matching numbers Z-28 so the case had to be repaired and we upgraded to a more streetable M22W gearset and other cool upgrades. Take the time to read my answers to other comments to avoid having to ask and me answer the same question. Thanks for watching!

It's all about KZbin promoting it. Stats show most views are not from Subscribers. When KZbin features a video which they did about a year ago, we gained some subs. So it's up to people if they like the content to share it. Few people do. They like the free content ,ask me for more free content such as do a video on ( fill in your transmission name here) and expect me to run out , purchase a transmission, and do a video so they can learn how to build that transmission on my dime. It's a wierd culture. I try and do videos of jobs that come into the shop or am willing to take jobs in that I may not do just because it's a paying job and I can help others with a video. I think most don't understand how long it takes to make a quality video and that's OK. It would be nice if people like what they see that they at least share it

That Muncie after you finished it is a "Thing of Beauty!" You are a Pro! I went to trade school for farm diesel mechanics. After a short career as a diesel injection pump specialist I ended up at a GM dealer as a parts manager. When the new style Chevy pickups came out in 88 we had a guy with a 5 speed manual develop an issue with a syncro or something so we had to fix it. The gear tech in our shop had never seen one and did not want to deal with it so I took on the job. I grabbed the manual and all the J-Bla Bla Kent Moore special tools and was able to get this thing back on the road for the customer. What a different animal!

Regardless that I am not mechanic but carpenter, I just love all great machinery work and parts. Like looking those gears is just something that fascinates me. The lathe is one of the machines I really admire, that what kind things can be produced with them. And this same admiration is about everything in such handwork production from aviation to cars, from paper factory machines to firearms etc. I don't care about cars and driving cars or owning ones, they are just vehicles for me, as my heart belongs to the sky. But the same engine designs, builds and work is done on the cars that is just amazing how well things needs to fit to get them working. And it is always nice to listen a insightful person to tell things about such things as gear fluids or show how they work with some piece of machines, as you learn always new things for everything else. Like almost two decades ago I met in the Cuba the blind engineer who was specialized to gearboxes. He did work with the older cars etc, but his skills to know in what condition the gearbox was just by a feel was amazing. He could just lay hand on the gearbox and feel what gears were weared and what parts were required to be tightened etc.

The tool with slot is newer style, also used on the Australian made 'Recoil' thread repair sets. With Helicoils, you should always go 1 thread below the surface. I can attest to the fact that you can break a tap in aluminum. I broke a HSS tap in a hole once at school. This was mainly because I should have verified the size of the drill bit I used rather than trusting that it was put back in the right place last time, which I should have done because there's a lot of young people that go to these schools who are still use to their parents cleaning up after them, I guess. Still, you can break a tap if you don't do a lot of tapping and haven't gotten use to the feel of your tap-wrench and by not clearing the chips if you let them build up too much. On a side note: May I recommend getting a small mill for reaming? Just a little Grizzly or Smithy mill. Even though that reamer appears to be made to go on a ratchet, it just makes me cringe seeing you do it by hand, especially into aluminum. ...Just a little respectful criticism. Other than that, great video.

Always when using a tap do a couple of turns and reverse turn to break the chip. Never let the tap clog up.

looks really nice. i prefer the belleville spring washers to the star washers, but otherwise just super nice.
@GearBoxVideo Жыл бұрын
On the high end racing stuff we use Nord-Lok washers. The problem is that if units are serviced in the field not everyone has these. Thread locking compounds such as orange gel Loctite and a simple star washer have worked successfully in endurance races with zero issues. So as an indivual disc washers are cool to use but if you have seen any Nascar units especially the newer transaxles use safety wire and thread locking compound. Having built gear boxes for the military its all safety wire
@odl21 Жыл бұрын
Makes sense. Also like lock wire but only when it makes sense with pair or group of bolts. And it’s time consuming to drill the bolt heads in a jig. I’m sure loctite and star washers work as well as a disc washer - it’s mostly about appearance for me. And the fact they are thinner so protrude less and leave more bolt in the hole. Anyway - nice work.

All Muncies have this offset. Part of the design. People always ask why this is and its because the engineers at the time could not figure a way to machine the tooth growth at the end after heat treat. So the gear is offset from the end. You'll notice 3rd is pretty close and 2nd is fixed relative to the mainshaft.

Actually if you look at the pic from on your link.You can see 3rd has a slight offset towards the rear. When I worked on the new midplate design I made sure we measured some new old stock cases to get the rear bearing position relative to the countergear thrust service exact. The newer gearsets improved some of the alignment.
