It is so nice to actually see something broken when you are looking for it. Thanks for filming all of that. It hopefully helps someone else out down the road.

a short piece of steel tubing, slight flair on end makes easy work of compressing and holding detent ball while installing the shift rail shaft. Well done

Sm 465s are the best Compound low 1st gear Transmissions ever, I love the spring loaded feel coming in and out of reverse, T-18 4 speeds(Ford) don't have that feel to them.

Way to go fixing the third gear pop out problem. I had a chuckle watching your video as I can relate to the bloopers. One thing I have done with roll pins is to find a drift punch that fits on the inside of the pin and put a spot of grease on the punch shaft to hold the pin. If you are lucky and the drift punch fits well you can use the punch shoulder to start the pin into the hole. Good video.

I'm NOT criticizing, just a thought here. I would think it would be a good idea to replace all the detent springs/balls at the same time, since they all came in the kit, and they're all the same age, installed at the same time. If one failed, I can imagine it won't be too long before the other ones do too. An idea to make them easier to install would be a short (2" or less) dowel of the right diameter, slightly tapered on one end, that you insert from the same end as the shaft. put the spring and ball in, use the tapered end of the "pencil-stub" dowel to start it in and compress the spring and seat the ball, then the flat end of the dowel is pushed on through and out by the shaft. I hope that makes sense, I can see it in my head, but can't explain it well. Anyway, I'm glad it fixed your third gear problem, and it didn't give you any more trouble than that. I lose words too, I think it's just one of those "benefits" of getting older. Thanks for the video, and good luck with the Blazer. It will be much better than just another silver SUV like everyone else has these days.

I guess these transmissions have had a history of this with 3rd gear , if I ever rebuild the whole trans I will replace everything, I was looking for a quick fix so I can stay focused on the Camaro, but you are right and the dowel sounds like a great idea , I will have to go buy one tho , as I didn't have one handy . Mostly trying to help other sm465 owners to see what the problem could be and some close ups of the parts , thank for watching

Great video. Do you have a link to that parts kit you have in this video? I'm in the process of rebuilding an 82 chevy step van with a 292 and this transmission and I'm tightening up the shifter slop and the loose fingers. Any info as to where I could find these would help. Thanks!

@jamesbyrd66366 жыл бұрын
I know this is an older video, but hoping for some input. There's another video on KZbin, along with some forums, that suggest that an updated 3rd gear is the fix for the 3rd gear popping out. Anyone have experience with this?
@MrFireman1646 жыл бұрын
James Byrd I have heard the same or watched the vid one or the other but in my case the springs had collapsed that push the little balls up , cost like 20-30 bucks for the kit , I still drive my k5 regularly and have had zero issues since the fix .

Glad it was a easy fix. My S10 started popping out of gear because I ran it low on gear oil (leak that I caused by messing up a gasket when replacing the slave cylinder). It finally locked up and I installed a rebuilt trans. It was too far gone. Lessons learned right. lol

Hello...I am attempting to replace the top transmission cover on a 1984 GMC truck with an SM465 manual transmission. Do you have any troubleshooting advice with replacing the top cover of the transmission? We have tried just about everything to replace it. Any advice would be helpful.

MrFireman164,I have an 89 GMC Sierra 4x4,halfton ,5.7, with the sm465 like this transmission you’re working on,it has about 400,000 miles on it ,been driving and shifting fine then I was headed home from work and I started hearing a whirring sound ,sounded like something barely touching a fan blade constantly,when I got off the interstate press clutch to stop at light,clutch felt ok but had to force it out of 3rd gear.now it goes in low and 1st easy but 2nd,3rd and reverse especially have to force it up in there pretty rough,but it doesn’t grind like you would think. But the wiring sound only starts when it’s in 3rd goin down the road ,please give opinion on what could be wrong?also are you anywhere near Tennessee and willing to rebuild my trans for me ?? Lol

So I have a sm465 in my 85 K5 Blazer and today I don't know how it happened bit it will no longer go into reverse and is stuck only going into first and second. When I remove the shifter the plates all lineup but the reverse button is poking out into the groove where I can see the spring. Does that mean that somehow the button broke? And is going to require pulling the transmission and rebuild?
@MrFireman1646 жыл бұрын
poisonknives nope you just need to make sure button is lined up right , you will just have to play with it till you get it to slide back into place , it’s tricky and a bit frustrating getting all that lined back up
