Interesting thing about the release date for this song. There was a jock on CIWW, a Canadian station, and he said it came out in 1967. Maybe, but it became widely recognized in July 1970, when I was 7. It may have been released in Canada in 1967, but it didn't chart in the US until July 1970.

The line about "If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel" - is saying that to impress a "rich girl" you have to take out to a meal, "wine and dine her", while a "poor girl" - just have fun. They aren't saying to take unwanted advantage of her - just saying you don't have to work as hard to impress her.

Oh boy. Mutton chops. Lennon tried them. And John Sebastian wore them for a year or three but it was Mungo Jerry's that made everyone think again. Pretty soon, we'd be hearing Leon Redbone doing resurrected '30s and '40s songs, but it was Mungo doing it on his own.

Lead singer Ray Dorset lives in the small town where I work (by coincidence in the county of Dorset). He uses the same fish and chip shop as me. I once got to meet him at a local charity event and graciously signed an autograph for me, and one for my old dad who was a big fan back in the day. In the town of Poole where I live the council used to do free concerts in the park every August. One year Mungo Jerry played there.it was my daughters first gig at less than one year old. They did a brilliant song called Lady Rose which deserved to do better than it did. A friend of mine bumped into Ray at Chez Fred’s of Westbourne (shameless plug for my favourite fish and chip restaurant) and said “ I love Lady Rose. That should have been a big hit”. Ray Dorset thanked him and explained that it didn’t do so well because the radio stations wouldn’t play it. Apparently they got a bit edgy about the drug references in the B-side, ‘Have A Whiff On Me.’

This was a One Hit Wonder from the 1970's. It was played on The Radio when I was a Kid. Also it reached a whole new generation of Fans when it was a Trivia Question on The UK Version of The Office.
