When this song first came out, it sounded like an 'oldie' from maybe the 1920s or 1930s. Discovering that it was a new song in 1970 really makes you wonder - what were the influences? The phrasing, the style of singing the lyrics, the aimless nature of the story being told, was NOTHING like the music in the 1970s - Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Clapton, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, etc. You heard this song on the radio, "that's an 'oldie' tune from the 1920s or 1930s" - it was nothing like the current popular music. It's a great tune but has a life of its own. It has a happy, aimless vibe to it

So, poor girls will definitely go out on a date with welfare bums like me. Keep in mind: not only is this a great song, but this deceptively simple video was ahead of its time. I've seen so many pre-MTV music videos from the '50's-'70's and they are always so easy to spot. And I've seen so many made in the MTV era trying to look as if they was made decades earlier, and they too are always so easy to spot. There are obvious clues every time based on the differences between the way people filmed in the two eras. This music video is a glaring exception. It was made in 1970, but it looks like it was made in the '70s style today. It has modern sensibilities that didn't become widely accepted for decades. Simple steady lighting. Minimalist background. Multiple angles zooming in and out on each performer while the camera also moves laterally. Near-perfect lip sync. No visible mics/wires/studio-equipment. No colored/flashing lights. No silly camera cuts. No bandstand. No unnecessary dancers in the background. No concert footage. Props to the director, and everyone else involved.
