Fun fact: the GE90-115B used on the 777-300ER is more than TWICE as powerful as all four of Titanic's engines combined. And they have to be in order to propel a 385 tonne jet through the air 8 miles up at sonic speeds!

Which just points out how inefficient air travel is. Like the largest boat in the world has just about the same power and it propels over 140,000 tons of cargo. But boats are slow. What about trains? The BHP Iron Ore train carries 24,200 tons of Iron ore, and up to 10,000 hp total over the two locomotives.

@@dy7296 That's not a thing of inefficiency, both energy and drag are squared as speed goes up linearly. So it'd take 4x the power needed to go twice as fast and another 4x as much power to overcome drag so it'd take 16x as much power to go only twice as fast. That also means it'd take 81x the power to go thrice as fast. Further more, planes rely on speed to stay airborne while boats rely on buoyancy to maintain afloat and trains don't rely on speed for anything other than getting to their destination.

@@dy7296 Also too, water is much denser than air so propellers on boats have more fluid to push back (thus a greater reaction force) so they are more efficient, that you have right. This is also the reason why propellers performance suffers at high altitudes where the air is much thinner.
