almost every English-speaking intellectual uses the term "in this period of time" and finally I hear Mrs. Ann used the correct form: period or time, using them together is a linguistic error like chilly cold because these two words mean the same thing in this context.

The moment when I think authoritarian I get in my mind the image of Anne Applebaum and her husband. But hey, what happened 10 years ago doesn't matter right? Who was pushing for ACTA and all other authoritarian projects? Your husband did. Who made an assault on the polish supreme court? Your husband did. Don't play a victim.

Anne, is smart and I find her perspective on society interesting. But I also not forget how she publicly defended Roman Polanski and asked for his clemency due to his affairs with underage girls. Read her opinion piece on this issue in the Washington Post (many years ago). Anne offered no plausible rational for excusing Roman Polanski having sex with a 14 year old girl. So I guess it’s because her husband is polish (Polish Secretary of State at the time) and Roman Polanski is also Polish. Very hypocritical in my view.
