Episode 28: Sandy starts things off with a bang by demonstrating a side curtain airbag deployment, after which we dive into the internals of the High Voltage battery. We examine what changes have been made since the initial Model 3 teardown, discussing examples of lean design methodologies displayed within the battery pack.

I worked 42 years in the electric utility industry from reading meters to controlling the grid so electric cars are particularly interesting to me. Your caution and use of PPE around the battery pack is quite appropriate since a mishap can result in a catastrophic energy release faster and much more violent than that airbag explosion. We own a Tesla Model X and I always treat it with the same respect that I would give an internal combustion vehicle with the engine running. Taking notes and waiting for the quiz. Jess

If I may make a suggestion to the photographer: I recommend that you pull further back for the majority of the videos. Include Sandy in the shot and any item he is gesturing to. Most often you will see videographers capture an overall scene then come in close to show detail of the item. If you can use any video editing software you could simply insert a still photo of the item at this point. I do appreciate that you guys are working under difficult conditions and making videos is new to you guys. I'm just trying to be helpful, not critical.

Value engineering is alive and well. Sometimes it is just finding a less costly component that meets the spec. The real home runs in VE involve finding a different way to do the same thing while meeting the performance spec, which can save far more than parts swaps. The product cheapening we see in many pieces of equipment (eg Harbor Freight) is not value engineering since that often reduces the service life of the item, which should be in the specifications.
