I love the quilt design, the colors and everything about it. But, what is a smooth quilt?

The smooth Cuddle/Minky backing versus a Luxe Cuddle. The smooth doesn't have any texture to it while the Luxe Cuddles (both from Shannon Fabrics) tend to have a longer length as well as embossing/texture to them :)

When you go to the next sections of quilting, do you baste down the sides each time?
