Murad I, known by the title "Hüdavendigar," was an Ottoman Sultan and a significant ruler who solidified the Ottoman Empire's power in the Balkans. He ascended to the throne in 1362 following the death of his father, Orhan Gazi. During his reign, the Ottoman Empire expanded rapidly, and the state organization was strengthened.
Key Events:
Battle of Sazlıdere (1363): Edirne was conquered, and the Ottomans established dominance over Thrace. Edirne was made the new capital of the Ottoman Empire.
First Battle of Kosovo (1389): A critical victory for the Ottomans in the Balkans. During this battle, Hüdavendigar was martyred by an assassination carried out by a Serbian soldier.
Murad I is the first and only Ottoman Sultan to be martyred on the battlefield. He established the divan system in state administration and implemented the timar system for the first time. During his reign, conquests in Rumelia accelerated, transforming the Ottoman Empire into a Balkan state.
