To all the people complaining about the audio, “Talkies” came in only a few years before this 1935 film (the 1930 date above is incorrect) and then mostly for established, big money studios. If you’ll only consider how new the technology was and the labor involved in mastering it you’ll realize the sound quality for this time period for a small production house is remarkably good. In short, cut him some slack Jack.

For classic vintage jazz fans this is also an important film - the only known film of bandleader and pianist Clarence Williams. he directs the band and the two pianists are Willie 'The Lion' Smith and Herman Chittison. Cecil Scott on clarinet.

Oscar Micheaux was ahead of his time. I'm sure it was very difficult to break ground in the movie industry. His wife was in this film and she was an actress as well.

Gosh all these lies. The Oscars were named after Oscar Hammerstein who had a much higher profile in Hollywood than Oscar Micheaux and who actually won 2 academy awards himself.
@miamonee15 жыл бұрын
thebeatnumber It’s not a lie. Oscar Hammerstein wrote music and plays, allegedly??? What does that have to do with movies? Oscar Micheaux has a Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame for his contributions to filmmaking. Someone that looked like him would never get credit for his work in that industry for anything, during that time. I read this in an article and it also stated: Hollywood will not admit this. You sound like you have a problem. This man was a trailblazer and an innovator in regards to filmmaking and he financed the majority of his films.
@miamonee15 жыл бұрын
thebeatnumber Also, if you google this Micheaux’s image appears with a comment stating that some librarian named Margaret Herrick who worked for the Academy Of Arts Sciences claimed the statue/award looked like her uncle Oscar??? So these deviants named it Oscar after this white womens talentless Uncle???? Does that sound right? But that is what White people do tell lies about anything concerning my people. They claim the origin of the name is uncertain. So where did you get Hammerstein from? I worked for some Hasidic Jews and one of them told me that they lie about history.
@thebeatnumber5 жыл бұрын
@@miamonee1 Micheaux's Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was awarded in 1987. Hollywood started referring to the academy awards as The Oscars in 1939. A movie critic called Sidney Skolsky started calling them The Oscars in 1934 and he very specifically mentions Oscar Hammerstein as the inspiration for the use of that name. There's documented evidence to prove this.

According to the onscreen credits, the story on which this film was based was entitled "The Stanfield Murder Case." The title of the film on the viewing print was Murder in Harlem, which may have been a later release title. A modern source lists the title of the film as Brand of Cain, although it has not been determined when that title was used. Publicity material preserved in the copyright records labeled the picture "Society's Strangest Triangle-The Story of a Jew, a Gentile-and a Negro!" The film was a remake of Micheaux' 1921 silent film, The Gunsaulus Mystery, which was based on the true case of Leo Frank, a Jewish man wrongfully accused and convicted of killing a girl in Atlanta. Although the governor of Georgia, John M. Slaton, commuted Frank's death sentence to life imprisonment, Frank was lynched by a mob on August 16, 1915. On March 11, 1986, the state of Georgia issued a posthumous pardon for Frank.

Leo Frank was guilty, so obviously guilty the jury couldn't pin it on the black man.

The "Oscar" was not named after this pioneering Black Film maker. Yet, who cares? He is the only Oscar in film I recognize. Oscar Micheaux wasn't just making movies, he was making cinematic rebuttals against all of the ugly racist stereotypes Hollywood films were and are still infamous for. Denzel Washington winning the Oscar for the film "Training Day" instead of Malcolm X was a travesty. The same for Halle Barry's Oscar win for "Monsters Ball". Hollywood was never meant for Blacks to be portrayed as equal to whites. That is why it is even more important that there are as many Oscar Micheaux's, Melvin Van Peebles, Gordon Park's Spike Lee's, Robert Towsends, Hudlin Brother's, Ice Cube's Tyler Perry's, and Ava Duvernay's as possible.
