The Atma-Linga
The Atma-Linga is a divine lingam, or sacred stone, that represents the soul of Shiva. The gods and goddesses worshipped the Atma-Linga to attain immortality and invincibility.
Ravana
Ravana was a devotee of Shiva who wanted to obtain the Atma-Linga to become immortal and invincible. Shiva granted Ravana the Atma-Linga, but only on the condition that he not place it on the ground before reaching Lanka.
The trick
Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganesha tricked Ravana into placing the Atma-Linga on the ground. Ganesha disguised himself as a young Brahmin boy and offered to hold the Atma-Linga while Ravana prayed. When Ravana turned away, Ganesha placed the Atma-Linga on the ground.
The temple
The Murudeshwar Temple is located on a small hillock called Kanduka, which is surrounded by the sea on three sides. One piece of the Atma-Linga fell on Kanduka and became the main deity of the temple.
The Murudeshwar Temple is a popular pilgrimage site and one of the oldest temples in the region. The temple has a 20-story Gopuram and a water park for families and children.
