It’s not advised to water Moringa (drum stick)Plant. Plant won’t get fruits if we water it. We can see enough moringa trees on the street sides across the Foreign countries like UAE. Lack of water is the reason behind those healthy trees. Mainly two kinds of Moringa is available- tiny herbs and massive trees. When the first has a life of one year, latter one lives for years.
Almost all Kerala houses have Moringa trees at their lands. Seed grown trees will give fruits in 9 months.
Moringa tree is one of the rare species where every part is beneficial for health and wellness. Moringa leaves are rich in fiber content. As it’s so easy to cook, we can eat the leaves after keeping the raw leaves inside the hot boiled rice for few minutes. All parts of muringa like skin, leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds and roots are highly medicinal.
It’s flowers, leaves and fruits are used for making curries. Juice of the stem and roots are medicinal. In short Moringa is known to be therapeutic with high nutritional content.
Coastal areas across North Kerala,Moringa grows well. Plant grows well in sand. People who plant Moringa in 5 or 10 cents of land and water it well, won’t get flowers or fruits out of it. More watering reduces their tendency to produce flowers and fruits. Sandy areas of Kerala and Tamilnadu has high growth of Moringa trees.
Tiny herbs die so soon but trees are not. The root of the trees will get decayed if those are planted in a land with high water content.
The fruits cost high in Kerala during wedding season. At times we get the same for less price too. Plants can be grown from stems as well as ripened seeds.
Seed grown trees grow fast and high. It’s better to cut the stem when it reaches to a height of 10ft or so. Otherwise the weak stems will be broken once it gets fruits. When we cut the stem in 10ft height, it will become stronger as it gets many branches
Seed grown trees produce fruits in 9months. Moringa doesn’t require any fertilizer or much water for its growth. We can leave the seeds to grow after sowing them.
Stem grown plants give fruits in 2to 3 years where as seed grown plants produce fruits in 9 months. Moringa can even be planted in the terrace of our houses.
This is Moringa seed. Once the drumstick ripened enough, it starts drying out and the seeds will fly out with its own papery wings from the broken fruit.
The natural wings are for spreading the seeds to a larger area. Within a few days, those seeds start sprouting in the land.
People complain that they have got land but no water for cultivation. Here we need to understand the fact that there are plants and trees which require very less or no water.
Among those species, one is Moringa and other two are neem and amla. Seeds of neem tree is used for neem oil and neem cake organic manure. Amla also of high medicinal value and the same requires very less water to grow. Thus we conclude, we have enough plants which can be cultivated well with very less or no water.
