In this qawwali, Hafiz (600 years ago) of Persia and Hasrat (77 years ago) of Lucknow are paired and sung by a unique qawwal Murli (a favorite of Nusrat & me). This is pinnacle of Sufism. Look at how & where they are singing; a broken place in Lucknow. 2 harmoniums, 2 dholaks, 2 clappers, a broken building, and dilapidated walls. Folks this is what one sees at the bottom of a pit. I wish you stay high & mighty.

Sir, I noticed all that, coming from the same background it did not surprise me. Today, I am 1000's of miles away but for some strange reason some places of Lucknow are still fresh in my memory(+60 years ago). I went on mapquest to check all these locations. At least I remember many names my mother & aunties used to talk about. It is ironic I will need passport & visa to visit the places where I was born & raised.

Returning back, today I am not Abdul Qudus, I am Erij Qudus. These guys are like my own people from Faizabad, they are real & these sessions are real and respectful, unlike what is seen in Pakistan, people acting like....., throwing money, and I question, is it your money you want to show? or you are here to listen and contemplate??? These are the gatherings where you sit quiet & listen, but not in Pakistan.

Great! Just dholak, harmonium, claps, voice, and if I mistake not all of ONE microphone (!) make for so beautiful experience/ atmosphere (mahaul). Simple but enchanting lyrics from Hasarat Mohani (as per the description above). He is famous for the Ghazal Chupake Chupake raat din by Ghulam Ali. Very few people who cherish that Ghazal would know that he was also a freedom fighter and was jailed during India's quest for independence. Thanks for sharing and also for the efforts for the posting the translation/ meaning.

See the dilapidated wall, cracking plaster, the old bed sheet and stool, the dress of qawwals and gloom lurking in the mehfil. Is it simplicity or poverty? Poverty of artists of his stature or poverty of we the audience to understand the richness behind such simplicity? Just compare it with the grandeur, pomp and glitter of dance and music shows.

I am sad to see that our younger generation is getting so detached from our cultural heritage while accepting & copying any.. .. from the West whether it is Rap , Hip hop, or something similar. This holy trinity of Hafiz, Hasrat, & Murli is as sacred to me as any other trinity. These qwaals did not visit West for $ or Pounds they did it because they loved it. Pure & simple, just devotion. All Love. I was surprised to read that Nusrat admired their style. He had good taste. May all you RIP.
