Murphy Wall Safe (Broken and no combo)

This safe is a rare antique. It is a Murphy Wall Safe, built by the Murphy Door and Bed Company from Chicago, IL. It was left with me for repair and took over three months to complete. Started in August 2019 and completed in November 2019.

This cover was corroded. The asbestos filler acts as a moisture magnet. Everything corrodes from the inside out.

I am working on a safe exactly like this one. What part was missing? It seems that mine has all the parts yours does except the brass washer. I figured out the combination but once open, continues to open…? Maybe the spring weakened? Thanks for any advice. J Bell

There is a spring between the inside of the outer wall of the safe and the wheel pack (combo pack). However, if the boltworks are not being fully thrown, the wheel pack can't properly release from the fence. As far as the brass washer, if it is what I think you are talking about, it is actually used to adjust the tension. It is more of a wave washer. It also acts as a barrier between the coil spring and the wheel pack.

I have 2 of these Murphy safes. Both of them will open RLR AND LRL. (with different numbers) I can’t figure out how they do this unless they cut two different slots in each wheel? Oddly, both work with the opposite direction by adding or subtracting. +11, -5, +5 respectively. Same formula works on both safes. I made a wheel model on my computer and can’t make it work. The only solution I can see is two sets of slots? Know anything about this?..

@@jamesbell4011 Think about it. The pins or protrusions (drivers) on the wheels that spin the other wheels have a specific dimension to them. When you dial CW certain numbers come up. When you dial CCW the numbers come up differently because you're now turning on the "wrong" side of these pins / protrusions and these numbers are "off" by the size of your "drivers". HTH GT
