I am 77 and have been lifting since I was 14. When youth is on your side, your muscles will dictate your workouts. When you get up in the age, your tendons and joints will start to dictate your workouts. I did well up to 71 but now arthritis is taking some of the joy out of training. I now have to do high volume training as opposed to lifting heavy.

Excellent straight to the point video. Age is mostly limited factor in our minds. At 46yrs, I have better results than when I was in my twenties or thirties and would spend even 150min at gym per training session. Been strength training for 30 years (not my main sports). Optimal results for me, even when younger, have been having at least 72hrs recovery between training the same muscle group and indeed having 3-4min rest between sets. I bring my sets to failure or near failure and 2min wont cut it.

Change your rep range every month. Slightly increase each week for the month. for example, sets of 8 week 1 bench..Top weight that week 4 sets of 8/slight increase next week by 5 pounds (you choose) and so on for 3 weeks. 4th week random fast workout. Confuse your muscles. They learn fast and only grow with confusion.

@@ed-te1fpWell, I think the point of the original post is the importance of consistency not that he's been doing it for 20 years. He's been doing it for 20 years consistently. But you don't need 20 years for visible results, 1-2 years could be enough to see significant changes IF you're consistent, have the right amount of protein and progressively overload. What said in this video can be said to anyone at any age because these are actually the basics. A higher protein intake after a certain age is preferable but otherwise there is no difference. I'm 50 and I've been lifting for 30 years. Consistently.

Take aways - 1. Don't believe your best gains are behind you. They are, but don't believe it. 2. Because you are older and your body doesn't want to put on muscle anymore, eat more protein than a younger person. Remember, your best gains are behind you. 3. Track your progress. It's gonna be much slower than it was just a few years ago, before your best gains were behind you, and you need to document that. 4. Since you are old and your best gains are behind you, up the volume. You need to work harder than you used to because you are old. 5. Rest more. You are eating more and exercising more, to make up for your best gains being behind you, so you need extra time to recover. Take a nap. As a 49 year old, I was reassured that I can continue to exercise as long as I temper my expectations and compensate for the fact that my best gains are behind me, as proven by science. Good motivational speech.

I think laziness, ignorance, and malnourishment or malabsorption covers the vast majority that do not gain or maintain healthy muscle mass and bone density. Observing frailty in the elderly is merely watching the signs of someone starving of fat and protein to death.
@hicoteo3 ай бұрын
I'll be turning 60 and agree with most here but there is a fine line between volume and recovery. The trick is to find your minimum amount of volume and side with recovery. I find that two full body workouts a week for two weeks and then one three times a week is all I need. I only do sets of three. So, that's only 6-7 sets per week per muscle believe it or not. I'm not huge, don't want to be but I stand out especially because I'm an old fart. 😂

Early 40s guys build muscle on average almost the same as 20 year olds. And if we only include healthy lifestyle people the they build muscle the same as 20s/30s. Including people in 40s in these training at "a later" age is silly. In biology people are categorized as young adults until 45, due to on average biological performance being very high, and aging only accelerating drastically at mid 40s, (44 on average, for bad lifestyle earlier, for healthy later.). Testosterone starts to only decline slowly (1-2% annually, slower if you have lived and continue to live healthy) around 40 on average and if you have lived healthy later, those that have lived poorly smoke and drink are significantly obese with diabetes it starts much earlier even in 20s, for subset of men it doesnt go down at all until much later. Testosterone being anabolic hormone, which contributes to strength and muscle building heavily and being the main culprit. These videos are more appropriate to men over 50 as being 43 and being 50 are worlds apart on average. Years after mid 40s hit like sledge hammer if you havent lived healthy lifestyle.
