Just got my Physical from Limited Run yesterday! Pretty pumped! I did double dip and bought the digital a while back, but since I don't get many games these days, (especially Triple A) getting something like this feels special. I've purchased all the M2 and LiveWire Cave games, but this one is up there for me. Love the whole bug and insect premise of the game. Very different indeed.

A small addition regarding input lag on Switch: It looks like playing in dock mode also adds some input lag, so the best way would probably playing in handheld mode.

To my knowledge the least laggy way to play the switch is - unfortunately - using the joy cons. Doesn't matter whether you're playing docked or wireless either. They are quicker than the Pro controller as well as the Brooks board. Quicker than any other possible third party device too. Whether docked play improves or worsens lag depends on the TV. The LG Oleds add 16ms of lag to any source that is at least 1080p. That is about as good as it gets as far as flat panel tvs are concerned. Crts are obviously your best bet, but they are used by like 10 people all across the globe. Bottomline : put a damn dpad on your joy cons already, Nintendo.

I actually learned a lot of stuff about shmups thanks to this review, I didn't know the slowdows are actually intentionnal, I always thought the game itself simply coudn't handle some of the crazier patterns (unless if the game *actually* struggles to display the patterns which is not good xD). Also playing any type of Shmups directly on the Switch's screen might be a good idea as the response time is still much lower than on TV.

The new porting company Livewire seems like very promising. I hope they get DOJ and Futari out to Switch. M2 is good and all but they really seems busy with too many of their stuff recently. So may be giving livewire a chance might be a good idea imo

The game in Ultra has some slowdown issues: 1. In a few spots the slowdown is missing. 2. In a few spots there's added/too much of it. 3. Most of the heavy slowdown is much more stuttery than pcb/360/mame with proper tweaks. Haven't tested other gaming modrs as i don't own the switch. Overall, in terms of slowdown, it is good, and feels good. The new transparent effect and bombs are pretty bad though (the 360 HD graphics are missing the visceral look of the original as well ), wish they offered an "arcade" graohics mode as well.

Oh thanks for the info on ultra mode, yes ultra modes are a real true test because they tend to be less accurate, why who knows, maybe some playtesting issues.

An Ultra playthrough (with 1cc at least to level 4, so the full power doesn't mess the speed in earlier levels) must be done to properly analyze the slowdown. Prefferably with W ship.

Got the limitedrun physical copy of this and play it using my wired Hori mini stick. Nice experience. I have 1CCed original mode in arcade and in v1.5 mode on Steam and it feels pretty much the same on Switch.

I know I said this in a livestream, but I really wished that the Cave shmup ports for Switch such as Mushihimesama on the were announced at the North American Nintendo's E3 2021 press conference instead of games like Just Dance 2022 or the Life is Strange collection, or as E;R would call it: Life is Tumblr collection. The Japanese E3 press conference showed Cave shmup ports for the Switch. Life is Strange and Just Dance 2022 taking slots over the Cave shmups still gives me a bitter after taste especially when these shmups are coming to the West and not many hardcore gamers like these games.

I would check to make sure the cost of putting a brooks in the Hayabusa is worth it. The Hayabusa is already a pretty good stick as far as lag goes. The only upgrades I did to it where adding a stiffer spring, octo gate, and a thicker actuator.

Strange thing about your brooks adapter. I've had the xbox360 to ps4 converter for a couple of years and never had dropped inputs, it could just be your particular adapter.

I think the Steam version was great if that's hat it was like, loads of different versions. if you can get a *physical copy* of Mushihimesama, is it worth it? HELL YEAH! Nice one to Live Wire for this release.. Even if it had slowdown or what have you, I'd buy if I had Switch. I loved the PS2 version, hopefully it'll come to PS4 or there may be a limited release (I'm still waiting for Dangun Feveron btw Limited Run Games, been months now.. Guys? Guys???). Anyone else waiting on a physical PS4 Dangun? The M2 PS4 games have been so great too, amazingly good.. I was happy to get a physical Korean version of Battle Garegga too, they've been busy man. Love that these games are being given a wider audience now.

I’ve just put a Brook board in my old TE2 stick to use with the Switch. Did you see Shmup Junkie testing this at nearly 5 frames through the dock?

Yes, but it's game specific with his testing. So for example with a more responsive game like Mushi you will get 3 frames of lag on the brooks board.

Yes CRTs are essentially lagless whereas the lowest I've seen for lcd anywhere is 1 frame of lag. Though a lot of lcd monitors are more than 1 frame of lag.

Yes it's VERRY LAGGY!!! I would not recommend it. There is a way to play Gunbird 2 on the switch with low input lag ... but it's a method that nintendo does not approve of ha.

Something I am curious to ask of regarding to input lag and stuff, does the game work better in docked mode or undocked? Reason of me asking is due to me noticing in handheld mode I notice inconsistency in terms of input lag, especially games that are very sensitive to input lag, when compared to docked mode (assuming in the case of original firmware)

So this is a really annoying but funny catch 22. When you play undocked, you remove the dock lag but gain the screens extra display lag. When you play docked, you potentially remove the display lag (with a fast monitor) but then gain the dock input lag. So it weirdly sort of washes out to be fairly even either way

Wouldn't the PCB version be considered the baseline in terms of input lag as that's the version that was available in the arcades? The original 'target' platform as it is. Considering how many hoops you have to go through to knock input lag down even further, it's probably best to consider what the built-in lag is as the 'standard' lag. I've been wondering how much built-in lag all these shmups have, from old school to modern, console and arcade, as they all seem to have it from the originals I've played.

Why is it that consoles always get the short end of the stick? Prices, input lag, worse anisotropic filtering etc These are things that aren't explained by PC being more powerful than console.

If you're struggling with latency in PC games, there are some things to do. 1: Don't use Windows 10 or Windows 11. Use Windows 7. 2: When using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, don't use Aero. Use Basic or Classic. 3: Make sure Vsync is universally disabled, and maximum prerendered frames is set to 1. 4: Never enable vsync. Just don't do it. 5: Run fullscreen windowed or windowed mode, not exclusive fullscreen.* 6: Use a high refreshrate display at a multiple of 60hz. 120hz, 180hz, 240hz, 360hz, 480hz. The higher the better. 7: Emulators are a crapshoot. Zsnes without Vsync works great. Everything else needs runahead or other tweaks. Most emulators do add one or more frames of input lag. 8: Play doujin shmups instead. They're less laggy than emulated or ported shmups quite often, especially old software rendering stuff. *Unless you're stuck with windows 10, in which case disable fullscreen optimizations, turn vsync off globally and in-game, and if these conditions cannot be met or don't reduce lag, don't use Windows 10, it's just bad.

Why the fuck didn’t they do PS4 ports? Nobody wants to play these on Switch. I refuse to believe that anyone finds playing Cave games on the JoyCons in handheld mode fun. I don’t even own an arcade stick for Switch, it’s not worth the space because almost all the ports suck anyway. I’m still stuck with the PS2 port of Mushi because I’m not JTAGging my 360 either. I do own the Steam port and a more than competent PC but I find that playing shmups digitally is a sure fire way to give up and close the game as soon as I die in order to boot something else, like skipping tracks when streaming music.
