Its easy to think that we are the main character in our story, but its hard to think what other people in the world are doing at any point in time. And here we have a huge disaster, where he had no idea what the scale of it was, and he was doing what he could to survive and to get back home.

Sure, you can say its x kilometers away, but using that in the context of a mana disaster doesnt immediately tell you your family is in danger. + he was knocked out for part of the journey, so he doesnt even have any idea how far away, in terms of time to get there, buena village actually is

Info from the light novels about the 2 sisters in Paul’s party, one dresses in such skimpy outfit because the other sister was sexually abused after getting teleported and she feels extremely uncomfortable when males look at her now, so the other sister dressing that way to draw all the attention.

One thing I point out a lot is the tidbit: in the moment he responds to Paul he doesn't think about it, and it's easy for the audience to forget too, but Rudy genuinely had to reason to think anyone else was affected by the mana disaster. Unlike all those in Buena who could watch it gradually encompass everything, Rudy/Eris were at ground zero. They were right next to it when it went off, and thus never saw the true scale it would get to. Edit: just want to say, I've seen many reacts to this is by far the best one in terms of picking apart motivations/perspectives, and you hit the nail on the head in numerous ways (many which will be elucidated further on, too) Edit 2: About the @51:00 discussion around Rudy and Eris - that mental image Rudy has is actually just a bit of a meme lol. A few years ago a pretty hot topic of discussion in the anime scene was a show called Goblin Slayer, whose first episode is.... Graphic.

well in anime it is like that but in LN he saw city of Roa affected by disaster too.. 'Right as I called out to Arumanfi, the sky turned white and a finger of light sped toward the ground. The instant it reached the earth the light ballooned at incredible speed, violently swallowing everything in its path like a tidal wave. The manor, the city, the citadel, the flowers and the trees. Paul ripping into Rudy about not going to the guild in Zant Port because Rudy didn't tell him he smuggled himself and a superd into the main continent. He never got a chance to explore Zant, he went to the smuggler's den immediately to free Rujierd and got captured by the Doldia tribe, so he never got a chance to see the message.

He sent the message when he was in the demon continent, hence why Rudy says “Why haven’t i done that” and “I had a lot on my plate!” trying to make up excuses why he didn’t read his letter. Here it’s supposed to show us that Rudeus’s real character (The main character who got reincarnated) isn’t taking this serious at all because he doesn’t view his reincarnated family as his actual family. It’s why Norn hates him so much until he fixes it because of how much developed throughout season 1 to season 2

Roxy brought "the letter" to the adventurers guild in "Wind Port"(demon continent, also to all cityes that she will pass) but in between having to master the magic eye and Gallus the cleaner he dint go to the guild afther the first day on the city. The "zant port" probably had the letter way before but Rudeus got directly from the ship to retrieve Ruijerd and got captured by the beast people, from the "sacred and secret village" the route to Milishon conveniently dodged any major city with adventurers guild. The anime dont say but the bully boy was a slave in a very diverse... brothel....

It is important to remember Rudy was at ground zero of the mana disaster he had no reason to think it was wide spread. Maybe he might think the Citadel of Roa might have been affected (Eris did) but he has no reason to think it would spread as far as Buena Village

The panties on the face and the goblin image that Rudy had, are both pretty big "cliché" in the Japanese nerd world. I didn't really took Rudy as fantasizing about that, but rather connected the event of a girl + goblin, to a flag being raised for that kind of outcome, which raised concerns for the safety of Eris

The anime just doesn’t show very much of his searching, and only shows the part of him drinking because that’s how low his depression has dragged him. The searching is *WHY* he’s getting drunk. Because he *has* been searching, and *failing* to find even a single one of his family members until Rudy showed up.

You know, those early morning hours before you get ready to go to work, or those late hours after you come home from work. The guy is doing his duties most of the day and just drinks when he’s not. You’re acting like the *little* but we see of him in those two episodes was all he was doing the entire time. If you read the novels you know that it’s not. Plus, it was a year and a half, not just one year. Have you ever been in a situation where your loved ones live(s) were/was in danger, and you had no idea if they were even alive? If so, multiply that by a year and a half and maybe you can understand why it drove him to drinking.

@@Hawkcam1996 No he wasnt lol. There is no downtime in a mission like this. He wasnt even on the road, he wasnt doing any duties, he was sitting in a bar getting drunk. His daughter wasnt even there, she had to find him in a drunken brawl. (probably happens a lot). This is a world where it can easily take a year just to travel 1 way. The show even goes out of its way to say paul is a loser by having his long time friend tell him so to his face. If my loved ones were missing I wouldnt be hanging out in a bar in all day. Id be on the road looking. And I certainlly wouldnt snap at the first loved one I managed to find intact because they didnt manage to find the rest while desperatly trying to survive multiple hostile lands completely unprepared due to the lack of guidance paul ever gave rudy about the world he lives in.

Wives worry about kids before husbands. Elder siblings worry about their younger siblings before their parents, etc. It's human nature to consider the safety of the ones you have habitually been responsible for before those that have been responsible for you. Paul didn't give Rudy time to think about anyone else before jumping down his throat.

In the light novel as from what I remember the reason why Rudy thinking about slyphy first not her Mom. It's because he thought Zenith, Lillia and Aisha was fine because Paul and Norn was there so he Assuming Zenith, Lilia and Aisha should be safe either.

yeah and he is absolutly right, i love his character in the anime and the ln. Spoiler for until EP 20: He expected so much of rudy and was sad that his amazing son didnt do as well as he expected it. I think his expectations were unreasonable but justified. I mean Paul has been looking for a long time and no Information on his Family and now that Rudy knows it he will find lilia in a relativly short time while not even really trying because his main mission is still getting home.

Well he knew Roa got engulfed in that light so he could assume that it affected that whole city but he has no scale otherwise. Though man god did say it was a widespread disaster during their first encounter or something along those lines. Rudy might not have thought about how widespread it was or missed that part entirely.

I think that are 3 main reasons Rudy did not think about his family potentially being in danger: 1. Rudy was at the center of the mana disaster so he did not understand the scale of it. His village was far away from where they got teleported from. 2. Rudy did have complete faith in Paul that he would keep the family safe even if anything happened. Hence why he asked about Sylphie first upon hearing about the disaster. 3. The demon continent is not to be underrestimated, even with Ruijerd's help, they had to be constantly on guard when travelling ; we can see that Rudy did all the thinking and planning for the long trip back, the party was his responsability and that was his 1st priority, he simply did not have time to take a break and think about "what if's". Finally, after reaching the human continent, he was able to relax and think about his family. Also a point to think about: Rudy and the party have been constantly gathering information but they have never heard any rumors about the mana disaster as far as i know, so they all probably thought that it was a local, small scale incident that they got caught into.

This one woman wearing revealing armor (Vierra I believe) actually has a reason for it. The magician girl (Sherra) in a robe that stays near her is her sister(?)/friend that had a very bad story after teleportation incident. If I remember correctly she had been enslaved and kept as a sex slave, because of that she has trauma and cannot stand when men are looking at her. Vierra is wearing such armor to make everyone look at her and not at Sherra. There are a lot of women who were turned into sex slaves or just raped (again, if I remember correctly, Vierra also suffered from this) and Vierra have been helping them recover from that trauma ever since she was rescued

33:32 Good instincts. You’re right. Paul hasn’t touched any woman since the mana disaster. He’s too desperate to find his family to even think about that. The reason that woman is dressed that way isn’t explained in the anime. It’s because her and her sister were both teleported by the mana disaster and ended up being slaves and that lead to her sister developing a fear of men(you can imagine what could’ve happened in slavery to lead to that) and she dresses that way to draw men’s attention away from her sister so she doesn’t have to deal with that fear.

what i like is in the end of the first half(ep.11) we see roxy look at a list and get the info that paul is looking for his family and by this episode everyone has forgotten it again, so we knew it and even with that information we didnt have it on our mind.

Paul has always had unreasonable expectations for Rudy, as demonstrated in the episode where he meets Sylphie and gets accused of beating up the bullies. On Rudy's part, he has no reason to believe that his mother, a former adventurer, or Lilia, an intermediate-ranked swordswoman who had served as the bodyguard for a princess, were in any danger. Due to his missing the letters at the adventurer guilds, Rudy didn't know that the mana disaster spread any further than the field in which he, Eris, and Ghislaine had been. ... Spoiler ... ... Man-God is a shmuck (which I recently learned is Yiddish for 'dick').

How many 5 year old's do you know are capable of doing something like that? Paul knows Rudy is exceptional and so he expects Rudy to do exceptional things. If my kid knows how to spell every word in the dictionary then i expect them to dominate every spelling bee contest in the country. Paul's reaction was natural and realistic given the circumstances. It's like Anna said, you can tell he's glad Rudy's alive and well but he's also disappointed that Rudy never got his message. So your definition of "horrible" needs serious work cause my family adopted my sister in foster care, i know what horrible fathers look like and Paul is most certainly not one of them.

Because of that, her sister got severe trauma from male gaze, so she's wearing that bikini armor to draw all the male attention to her. Paul put her in charge of the rescued women because he doesn't know how to deal with women in that situation.

I love this episode so much because Neither Rudy nor Paul was in the right, or in the wrong either. It was a misunderstanding caused by Rudy telling the story in a gleeful way and Paul cutting him off before he explain the part where he went to retrieve Ruijerd from the smugglers and got taken prisoner by the Doldia(that’s why he didn’t see Paul’s message).

Ben's remark on a subject caught me completely off-guard, as a WN reader, I'm was not prepared for them to touch on THAT subject this early on, and they were on the right track, damn, this is good.

It gets skipped over in the anime because there simply isn't time for everything, but Rudy did learn about the mail system very early on. And put simply, it basically doesn't exist on the demon/magic continent that he was teleported to. It's too difficult to traverse and being able basically means you can make a MUCH better living literally anywhere else. And yeah, as you noticed, the reason he didn't use the first chance he would have had to write was because as soon as he made landfall the smuggler mess happened.

I’m glad you considered both sides. I’ve seen a lot of people become immediately indignant towards Paul for how he acted. And I think you hit a lot of the points. I’ve had time to think about it and it makes sense. It’s a break down of communications based on bad assumptions. Why didn’t Rudy think to look for other people? He was at ground zero of the mana disaster. He didn’t see it effect anyone else. And he certainly didn’t know how big it was. Why didn’t he worry about his mom. He hadn’t known how big the disaster was- Buena village was days away by horse from the disaster. And his dad is okay so of course his mom must be okay. Why didn’t he see the message in Zant Port? There was no way to no go through the port on the route he took. Well, he was smuggled through the port and spent no time there, so he never made it to the guild. Then he was stuck for months in the forrest so they just moved on when the weather cleared. Rudy made his story sound fun and care free so his dad wouldn’t worry, but his dad took it that Rudy didn’t even try when he’s been trying so hard. Then Rudy does what he does when he’s attacked and cannot flee, attack back with pain points, hence accusing of him of being unfaithful. And it just kept spiraling down. The bags under Paul’s eyes shows he hasn’t been sleeping properly meaning he is likely in great distress. Why did he put so much pressure on Rudy to do better? One because he’s likely failing. Two because Paul has always had trouble with seeing Rudy as a kid. He acts like a kid but he talks like an adult, rarely needs to parented, and was learning magic like a future master. Paul has questioned what he’s taught his son before. So, it’s sad, but I understand what happened. On that note, the next episode is a favorite of mine.

I think something people don't get about Rudy is they should actually treat him like a child socially. Because of his Neet lifestyle he never really got the experience someone his age should've gotten with dealing with others, and so while he has 30ish years of experience living he hasn't actually lived those years and matured like someone would normally, which is why I consider him a child in some aspects. He's growing in his own way still and this proves it because he just didn't think about certain things or never picks up certain social cues.

Yes, that is the exact reaction I am expecting from everyone who watched this episode. Also, some of the theories were eerily spot on. The reasoning for Rudy for asking Silphy first because he has been always thought the family is safe with Paul, which is why the sneer on how his mother and Lillia is aware that Paul is with another girl. It is also hinted previously that Rudy imagined when he reached home, everyone will be waiting for him as he is not aware the scale of the disaster. During his banter with Paul, the train of thought was caught one reveal at the time. Also, take note, he will take the advice about gathering information on the mana disaster seriously which affect his decision to ask question about the disaster to "someone" in the future. As of why Rudy never aware of Paul message left at ports, you will notice that with the chain of event that happening, Rudeus was never had a chance to visit the guild at both ports. Some extra trivia which left out from anime: The girl who wear bikini armor wore it purposely to grab people attention away from her sister (shy girl in robe) who is traumatized by the incident happened to her after got teleported.

Amazing reaction as always, and one thing I found most amazing was that Anna actually put herself into Rudeus' state of mind when talking abt him mentioning Sylphy first. This is something I see most ppl neglect, he saw Paul, he saw Norm, why would he think that his mom n Lilia werent safe. He even asked did his mom n Lilia know that he was here w a hottie, his mind filled in the blanks that his family was safe and they were somehow here w Paul. Paul got mad because he knew that his wives n kid werent safe, Rudeus didnt, and when he realized it the shock was huge, and he began to guilt tripping himself.

Offering my own interpretation of their argument, both Paul and Rudy never considered the other to be in danger. Paul completely believed in Rudy. Though it can be interpreted as a coping mechanism for Paul to believe that Rudy HAS to be alright, he knows Rudy is smarter than himself and incredibly capable. After all, the reason Paul had to knock Rudy out to get him to do the tutoring was because Paul knew Rudy would for sure win the argument in allowing him to stay with Sylphie. Paul never considered that Rudy would be struggling let alone being a child in actual danger, hence why he was pissed that Rudy never considered helping with the Teleportation incident. On the other side, Rudy had way too much on his plate and could only think of Eris being in danger. He never considered that giant blast would spread out that far past where he was hit. Once he heard that it did hit his home village, I think the reason why he worried over Sylphie over anyone else was because he never considered the others to be in danger. He knows how capable his parents and Lillia are and to that extent, he believes his little sisters to be safe with him. He never considered that anyone else would be in actual danger other than the little crybaby Sylphie. Not to mention, Rudy is very naïve. He stopped properly living after high school and, even after reincarnated, he is still a child both physically and mentally (something more highlighted outside of the anime). Because Paul expected too much of him and never considered Rudy's hardships, he snapped at Paul and let out all his pent-up emotional stress. In this way, you could further see how similar Paul and Rudeus are similar as people (something highlighted in the first season).

Paul over reacts, but I feel for him. After a year and a half of fruitless searching the one big hope he was holding onto was that his unnaturally capable son would have figured out what he couldn't. Finding out Rudy didn't even know there was a problem beyond what happened to him personally had to be devastating to Paul. We were watching his last hope get crushed in real time as he listened to Rudy's story. I can't really blame Rudy though either. He had no way of knowing the disaster reached further than that area he was in when it hit. It's surprising they didn't catch rumors of it in adventurer guilds and such, but I guess it was just bad luck. Man I love these two episodes!

The one thing about this interaction that always got me is that I understand both side of this. Rudy has been isolated for the largest amount of time with only 2 people around, he's been through cities but it's not been to the guild as he 'wants to get home as fast as possible' Meanwhile Paul has been hunting for his lost family and everyone else and he's found SOME but not his, he's been stuck thinking that his wife and 3 kids are dead and his oldest friend as well. And of course Paul isn't going to question why Rudy is fine, how he survived on the Demon Continent and what he had to do to get where he is, he isn't a smart guy who would think that things have been hard dangerous and there's been moments where Rudy nearly died. While equally Rudy isn't that smart of a guy and won't ask why Paul looks to be a shadow of his former self, why he's haggard or in a tavern with people saving people from kidnappers. Worst of all, I see the Mana disaster from both their viewpoints, why would Rudy think it's affected anyone else, he hasn't heard of people randomly dropping out of the sky so of course he wouldn't think that it has affected the region. While Paul lived through it and saw everyone else disappear and that has him asking why his son who is a magical genius didn't think of this. and Rudy not realising his home village is gone also fits, because he lives a very long ways away from the place he saw the disaster start, why would he think it'd affect anyone else. What it ultimately comes down to is that both are stupid idiots who - if ANYONE ELSE were there - would've got them to realise and calm down over this. So two people who are equally stupid think the same stupid thing at the same stupid time. 'he just doesn't understand'.

Yeah that's the real sad thing here. It's just unfortunate how things turned out. Some things to note though. Rudy had no way of knowing that the mana disaster was as big as it was as after all he was at the epic centre of it. The only other person he knew was affected by it was Ghislaine who he felt he didn't need to worry about as after all she is a sword king. After thing to note is that the demon continent doesn't receive many if any messages from other continents that much as well no one wants to be the mail man in that hell scape so I doubt news of the disaster ever reached it. Zant port was also the place he got kidnapped by the Beast people so he had no chance to visit the adventurers guild there and see Paul's message. He also did tell Paul a version of his story that avoided a lot of the grimmer details as he didn't want to make his dad sad so he made it sound happier than it was which obviously upset Paul as he's now under the impression that Rudy had a super easy time.

Looking from Paul's side further. You touched on the expectations Paul had, and how hard he's had it, but while we know that Rudy's real parents aren't Paul and zenith. They raised him and loved him, to paul rudeus is his real son and he thinks that he is Rudy's real father. The thought of Rudy not asking about his mother destroyed paul, who has spent the last year and a half tirelessly looking for her and the rest of his family. Also they missed Zant port because they were smuggled in like you guys said, but in Paul's mind it's impossible to get from the demon continent to Millis without going through it

One thing about this scene I really like is that Paul doesn't know where exactly Rudy was when the mana disaster hit. He, Eris and Ghislaine were the first people caught on it, so they didn't see just how big it was. From their point of view, they didn't even have reason to think it'd hit Roa, much less Buena village. The best evidence of that is in fact US, the viewers. Almost no one watching this realized how big the disaster was until we had the scene with Roxy looking at the notice board, and that's the same amount of knowledge Rudy had. So Rudy not thinking about his family is perfectly natural, but Paul is also pretty justified in his disbelief, because he isn't aware of how specific the reason for that. If Rudy had been in Eris' castle, he'd have seen Roa getting swallowed by the explosion and would have reason to assume everyone could have been affected, and that's a very natural assumption for Paul to make, since Rudy did spend almost all his time in there.

The pacing is so weird in hindsight. I watched this show (season 1) around one and a half years ago, and I remembered the arcs getting longer. I thought, the time at the castle was around twice as long as the time at his village. And I thought the time at the demon contitent was about as long as the time before the mana incident. Think about this, not only was Rudy and Eiris at ground zero. They were a good ways away from the city. You got to think, he was about to show off his Saint Class Water Magic. And if you remember, Roxy took him off to middle of nowhere just to avoid anyone getting hurt. He had no reason to believe the mana disaster had such a large spread. Proof of this is his reaction to the young women who are working with Paul. In the words of Rudy: (does mother and Lilia know about them?). Last but not least, Rudy never made it to the guild in Zantport, which means he never got to see Paul's message. I believe that in his mind, everyone was safe.

imo Rudy actually have few problem that cause this situation what we met. 1. The transport disaster had happened where Rudy was , so ofcuz in Rudy's sight he couldn't actually know what's going on, though Rudy could guess or reasoning the disaster range. Nonetheless he need to take care about Eris and run Dead End party decently. Plus dont forget the beginning of Ruijerd and Rudy's relationship. 2. While Rudeus had no way of knowing how large the impact of the Mana disaster was, people need to remember he's only 10 physically. He put zero effort into investigating the disaster even though he knew Ghilane was teleported as well. So I side with paul ever so slightly more, still the way this is resolved is done so well it brought a tear to my eye.
