You and Gary over at Fresh From the Farm Fungi are my absolute favorites for this subject on KZbin -- pure facts, no redundant rants, and it seems like you both have academic or professional backgrounds in microbiology, if not specifically mycology, so you guys know what you're talking about and can get into the weeds with it. The latter is what really sets you two apart from the rest (most of whom are just regurgitating what they learned or heard elsewhere). As a newbie, I always learn quite a lot of new information from each of your videos, so thank you very much for making and posting them!!! I really appreciate it!!! Please keep doing what you're doing 💕

I think Gary is doing a series on serial dilution and singling out viable spores. I am highly interested in this subject. Thank you guys for helping everyone understand our fungi friends.

@Alexmw77723 күн бұрын
i love your educational content. i understand that you want to keep things brief for an introduction, but don't be afraid to make longer form content that goes into more rigorous detail if you think you'd enjoy filming it. you make a great educator. i'd watch longer-form lecture style content.
@edwardgrand23 күн бұрын
I go into a lot more detail in the lives. I do enjoy doing 'lecture' style things, but it is quite hard in a video to go on for any length of time without it getting boring. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching.

Thanks, that makes sense now. I have a small 100x-450x-750x monocular non-digi Microscope: Do you think a 750x Microscope is good enough to see the spores in the different states? Thanks Ed, have a great day!
@edwardgrand Жыл бұрын
For sure. 450 or 750X is plenty. I usually look for clamps (or lack of) at 400X. No problem. I hate going to oil at 1000X. Messy.

....What? Just kidding, great video! That cleared up a lot for and also gave me plenty new roads to go down learning wise! Awesome! Thank you. Right before this I was staring at a plate with a ton of different splotches where the spores have germinated thinking.... so I just pick the one I like and transfer it? This really helped me to gleam a bit more insight as to what was going on on the plate. I'l definitely do a few good transfers to simplify the genetic makeup.

As always, great and helpful. How close do the genetics have to be to “merge” 2 spores? Like could it be an active and an oyster? I am guessing not, otherwise we would see them around?
@edwardgrand Жыл бұрын
They need to be closely related. Like a horse and mule, not a cat and dog. You're right. If you could do it, someone would have already.

I'm a dinosaur and am here to learn. If I misbehave let me know . I ordered spore syringes and got 3 kinds most of the boxes looked like normal shrooms except 3 boxes turned out to be blobs. They look like sea shells. I never saw anything like it then I saw you had some too. Are these accidents. One blob was 200 grams wet. Do they work? Is it a good thing?
@edwardgrand Жыл бұрын
Blobbing is a real thing, but no one seems to know why they do it. Sometime genetic, sometimes environmental. I am just trying to pull out some of the blob genetics using the Buller phenomenon (di-mon pairing). If you could figure out why they do it, I'm sure a lot of people would love to know :)

Hi Ed, Would you be able to do a quick video explaining why infinite cloning degrades the genetics of the mushroom, or is this more misinformation?
@edwardgrand Жыл бұрын
There are a lot of opinions on this. I don't have the definitive scientific answers. For the home cultivator, it doesn't matter.

If there happens to be an odd number of manokaryon colonies, what becomes of the odd/remaining manokaryon?
@edwardgrand Жыл бұрын
On an agar plate, the dikaryon will most likely outgrow the two monos. The dikaryon usually shows rhizomorphic growth which is isolated to a new plate and transferred repeatedly until it hopefully becomes a 'monoculture'. There are many variations on this theme though. In the verified mon-mon mating scenario, there is only one possible outcome for the dikaryon which forms as the monos will not dikaryotize with themselves. This is why multi-spore 'double swabbing' methods are more problematic. In a mon-mon cross, there should never be an odd number of monos. There should only be two on the plate.
