Mushroom compost is awesome stuff 🙂 I get substrate bricks from a mushroom grower, break them up and create a thick layer in our raised beds. I make sure it goes over a layer of newspaper-wrapped kitchen scraps then a layer of cardboard. Then I top it with a layer of grass clippings, followed by scraps and compost/soil to plant into. I get a heated base layer which helps get vegie seeds started, followed by a big crop of oyster mushrooms. It's great for being able to keep growing or start cuttings outdoors in our cold Autumn and Winter (in Tassie), without having to build a greenhouse, which I don't really have room for.

I have a question my garden was terrible last year because I live in the bottom Suite of an apartment and so this year I decided to get organic soil so I choose a soil on the existing dirt and then I threw some bagged organic 50% mushroom manure on top of the soil and I'm starting my seeds inside so when do you think I can rototill the the dirt with the mushroom manure it's just sitting there what do you think would be the next step can I take a shovel and turn it over and mix it with the dirt right now or should I just let it sit I did this yesterday and I bought the bag mushroom manure and I also bought the bulk mushroom manure that you see in this huge garden centres where you help yourself and I was thinking of putting that on my lawn right away because it's not the best lawn can you give me some information about that please

I use a variety of composts. I make a poultry run wood chip deep mulch cold type compost, a green waste hot compost, and I buy in mushroom compost and old cow/horse manure. For a new bed I like layer them up and dig it in a bit if I can, and for existing beds I like to layer them and top with grass hay, sugar cane mulch or whatever I have around. I feel like each compost has something a bit different to offer nutritionally and biologically. I don't mind too much about what it is, so long as I have something to feed the soil.

I’ve purchased a bag of mushroom compost from Bunnings, I’m planning on growing mushrooms from it, I’ve seen where someone has done this and they have lovely looking mushrooms, then when it’s finished giving me mushrooms I’m planning on either adding it to my compost or putting it on my garden. Can you grow mushrooms on organic sugarcane mulch? I know you can on pine bark, worth a try I guess, I watched a video where a guy made a mushroom “milkshake” then poured that over his compost pile, the video didn’t then show us the results but he said it works, so was thinking of making a mushroom “milkshake” and pouring it over my sugarcane mulch.

My tomatoes seem like they do not like the mushroom compost? They are smaller vs tomatoes in Black Kow manure, and the one in potting soil only. Everything else mixed into the grow bags is the same. Perhaps its too alkaline for the tomatoes? Suggestions as to how to get past this? Oh I also read its higher in salt? The plants are smaller, not growing as fast, and sort of shrivelled leaves.

I'm in northern Virginia, USA. Ordered 3 cu yards of 'mushroom' compost to start a no-dig garden. After sitting on my driveway for a few days, I measured the internal temp of 170 deg F. I won't try to use it until it sits and cooks thru the summer. I compared it's ability to grow seedlings with leaf compost, and the mushroom compost not very effective supporting germinated seedlings. So, Yea, better check the temp before using and give it time to fully cook before using.
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 3 жыл бұрын
You made some great points there. Pro tip, when I buy it I wait until it's been harvested from the back of their pile for some time. Which means it has been sitting in the yard for breaking down more. I use a special worm cast mix to raise my seedlings and it works a treat. You can see how how I do it here in the course Starting Organic Seedlings A Beginners Guide kzbin.info/door/nPkv-JUX4Pqn_LYbykzAtwjoin in the Worm Wranglers members area. Mushroom compost is the medium used to grow mushrooms intensively. After a few harvests, the mushroom compost is replaced and the old stuff sold. Sometimes you will get a few mushrooms popping up which is from the spores of the growing mushrooms. One year, I made the mistake of placing a couple of piles on my lawn and the compost killed the grass - the grass took 2 years to cover the patch. It might have been from the humic acid that is added to the compost. I've used it before on grass but spread it straight away and rain came not long after and the grass really greened up. So don't pile it!
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nessa, that's very odd. Because I do pile it to compost it further and to make my blends.
@nessav7258
@nessav7258 4 жыл бұрын
@@martysgarden It's not clear if you pile it on tarp or for how long you pile it for. All I know is that I won't pile it in heaps on my lawn again. Maybe the humic acid was too strong or it cooked the grass but the soil must have been affected too because even grass runners didn't survive. I think if it was composted further it would be better to use straight from the mushroom farm.
