Mushroom Hunting

Mushroom hunting for beginners. This video goes with me on a mushroom hunt in the Midwest. I was looking for oyster mushrooms but did not find any edible ones on this outing.

All mushrooms are edible! Some only once =D I borrowed that joke from a mycologist at Purdue University. The same mycologist also explained that out of 3-4k species of mushrooms and fungi, only a dozen are deadly and about a dozen in the midwest are highly desirable for flavor and/or medicinal qualities. The rest fall under the non poisonous and non edible category. Sean, this time of year is also great for finding chanterelles! Brown young tender ones with salt and butter and they'll taste just like bacon!! The mature ones are great in soy sauce/butter/siracha marinade. You'll find them just off a path on disturbed dirt (not on wood or hidden logs - those are the poisonous jack-o-lanterns) and somewhat near a body of water (within 1/4mi). Some grow near still grass; some in the shaded forrest. All like very hot and humid micro environments so go looking after a nice rain storm. As always, God Bless and happy hunting!

I’m gonna give everyone advice when in doubt throw it out mushrooms can be dangerous make sure you know what your eating everybody should stay safe some mushrooms are amazing taste good however be careful ❤❤ ❤

Also mushrooms can also be safe and healthy I’m not trying to tell you not to go get wild mushrooms but definitely be careful

I agree. That is why I was only looking to pick a specific type that I knew for sure how to identify. I ended up just walking past hundreds of mushrooms on this walk and left them alone as a result.

You looking for some Morel mushrooms??? I hear that they are really good eating.

I have once or twice. Didn’t find any yet though. Funny thing is that my next time out after this one I found a bunch of Oysters and didn’t bring the camera hahaha.

What kind of hunting boots do you wear in hunting season

Mast often i wear rubber boots that slip on and come up about 17 inches
