I like how this show slips in little commentaries and deep jokes like Mai making Momotaro (old story about a boy born from a peach who grows up to go fight ogres and bring gold and silver back for his family) a modern-ish grumpy military man (pretty sure the subtitles are off and are simply describing the picture, when what she says is actually akin to "look forward to it" or "it was/is interesting, anticipate it", though my Japanese could be pretty scuffed, especially with how soft spoken Mai is sometimes). Regardless, I think it has a lot to say about the implicit militarism of the classic Momotaro myth, and how in a modern light sending the son off to war is not nearly as heroic or justifiable anymore, these are always my favorite parts of Nichijou, even if they are pretty vague as to what they are trying to imply, and I probably am very biased in my interpretation, still, it's a shame little things like this don't seem to get as much praise as the more easily accessible slapstick (which Nichijou is also VERY good at, so that still deserves the praise it gets).
