I am a local musician just subscribed and I remember the Lamplighter and the Fairview and the Town Pump was the first place that I saw some of the bands live - Hootie and the Blowfish - before they were all over billboards and it is a complete tragedy! However I am not a band I am a solo musician just now finding some kind of small success on the street and I don't know the answers but I love your views and comments on this ever lasting problem that pervades humanity like where does music find its way - it is why there is no such thing as overnight success we are all living just for music and we would play it no matter what - I always hope that we can make some money too so we can eat - ok love you all for your music and your thoughts - thank you so much!

It's a hard city to build a following (at least for a rock band). Hardly any venues for bands starting out and less and less young people have the money, time, or interest in going to see a live show. A night relaxing at home vs spending $50 on transit admission and drinks to see your friend's band and 3 other crapshoot bands is a tough sell when people are tired as hell from working and need every dollar they can get It's also on the bands to contribute something of worth. I've played countless shows where there was at least one band on the bill that sounded like a more butt-rock Guns n Roses. There's never been a shortage of groups that sound like that here and they come and go like the rain. And even if a band's original it's an uphill battle because people here have extremely specific tastes in music. Through this pandemic the bands I've been following from here have done barely anything, just disappeared off the face of the earth. Maybe everyone's recording or looking for work but it's weird when you've got all these people on CERB but they haven't posted anything It's also kind of bullshit that nowadays you have to have professional video content to enter any contests put on for bands to win money/recording opportunities. Why tf do you think a band would be entering a contest like that if not to earn money to afford a video in the first place?!?! You can't deny that music is worth nothing now. And with more people than ever worldwide releasing songs it's comparable to a sperm to egg race. It's made me feel pretty jaded, mainly because I've wanted live music here to work so bad and for so long. Even with the pandemic putting a hold on live music I'm not very confident in what the response is going to be once it opens again. Which venues will be left? It's going to be fine for the big ones like the Commodore and Vogue and Venue, but what else will there be?
