Twelve years separate Beethoven’s second (1796) and third (1808) sonatas for cello and piano. While in the G minor sonata Beethoven still emphasizes the piano, in the A major sonata the instruments are given a more balanced treatment, with even a momentary reversal of the idiomatic logic. In Op. 69 Beethoven also manages to combine drama and texture, as he did in the Kreutzer Sonata.
