This is an interesting introductory song for the gigantic musical rabbit hole of this series, because it's definitely one of the more simple songs out there. There's a lot more variety to be found, especially in some of the more well known or iconic tracks that people usually run into first, like UN Owen Was Her, Reverse Ideology, Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom, Necrofantasia, or especially one I think Tony would love, Primordial Beat.

I found it quite funny that part of Mayumi's theme "Joutoujin of Ceramics" sounds similar to Undyne's theme "Spear or Justice". It could be a total coincidence, but I remember that ZUN said he liked that particular song a lot. So it wouldn't surprise me if he drew some inspiration from it.

The cool thing about touhou is that there are multiple "eras", some games have a more defined style than others. For example touhou 13 sounds very different than touhou 6. Touhou 15 sounds a lot more different than touhou 18 or 19. Touhou 1-5 is made for pc 98 and sounds a lot more retro, 6-12 are more acoustic sounding, 13 has a different vibe, 14 has these cool drums and electric guitars, 15 is more space sounding, 16 introduced these new drums that were used until halfway through touhou 18, 19 has these thicc bass and erhus, etc. Very cool to see a reaction to one of the tracks usually not covered by people.

Glad to see you react to an internet main stay series, since it wasnt in the notes given to you, ZUN always adds a comment of his on the music room where one can listen in-game to the ost, here its the one for this theme "This is Megumu Iizunamaru's theme. As befits an important tengu, this theme is melancholic while still retaining a jokey feel. The main phrase of the theme is nostalgic for me personally, and for some reason it makes my eyes tear up. I wonder if it's because we rarely see themes with game-like phrases like this anymore." Some extra info now more, on about ZUN stance of derivative works, there exist some easy to find, and to understand, guidelines ZUN has made about fan work, in short, as long you have common sense (no stealing, claiming as your own or defaming touhou or other), fans are free to basically create whatever they want and even monetize it through events or platforms, which gives even more drive for people to create new things since they can get money out of it along doing something they are passionate with, which shows in the myriad of music rearranges and art pieces around touhou and the amount of fan games created, its literally a creative haven for people

yeah, generally people always go for like the same ones when reccomending so wanted to mention some great and more recent ones, its always UN Owen was Her, Inmortal Smoke, Septette for the Dead princess, Native Faith or Hartmann Youkai Girl, but the newer entries have ZUN experimenting so much more and trying new styles and instruments, like Zanmu which uses vocals or Biten which uses the erhu, as ZUN never ever really goes stale in his compositions, he just takes risks and does what he wants or feels to@@-butterfly-594

There's something nobody ever mentions about ZUN as a composer, IMO he is a genius at instrumental storytelling. He can tell you a story with nobody but some chord progressions and a few tone changes. "Reach for the Moon ~ Immortal Smoke" is my favorite song he's made cause it tells the tragic backstory of the character so well and explains how she lives her now immortal life (spoiler: it's incredibly painful)

so great to see you reacting to touhou music! there’s an incredible variety in that game’s soundtrack, i’d strongly recommend listening to some of the much earlier tracks as well, since the soundfont is SHOCKINGLY different across games. it’s hard to choose, but i think my top picks for you would be Treacherous Maiden ~ Judas Kiss (proper old school game music), Shanghai Teahouse ~ Chinese Tea (very cathartic melody), Mystic Oriental Dream ~ Ancient Temple (beautifully haunting instrumentation), Hartmann’s Yokai Girl (WEIRD time signature), Lunar Clock ~ Luna Dial (EXCELLENT drumming sections that i would kill to see someone attempt live), Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess (just goes absolutely nuts) and Border of Life (this one actually has 2 parts, the latter of which is for boss’s final attack where you just have to SURVIVE and i TRULY cannot wait for you to hear that one). great video as always, and look forward to experiencing the rest of your touhou journey!

Unlucky Morpheus (you have reacted to a couple of their tracks in the past) actually started out as a Touhou doujin group with only 2 members way back in 2008 and continued to mainly release music based on Touhou for a long time (I believe until 2015 or so) before making more original music and getting more members. They have done a whole bunch of reworkings and play a couple of them even now during their shows. They have also done an acoustic album as well with Touhou covers, which is fantastic. A great one to check out is their live version of その魂に安らぎを　～ Dignity of Spirit.

ZUN's style has changed and refined over the years but it sounds like he's still retained his knack for unique hooks (which is also part of the reason why so many people love to do Touhou arrangements/remixes). That being said, Touhou 6-8 were where the series really took off, and inspired a LOT of people. If you like what he does with the trumpets, you should check out Yuyuko's themes from Touhou 7 (Perfect Cherry Blossom) - "Bloom Nobly, Ink-Black Cherry Blossoms" and "Border of Life". They're written to pair with each other so it might be better to consider them as a single composition.

0:37 They forgot to mention one important detail. ZUN makes all of these games, including the music, while drunk. He drinks a lot of beer, and I mean A LOT. It's to the point where it's kind of an iconic part of him. Almost every picture you see of him he is holding a glass or a large pitcher of beer. P.S. Touhou is lowkey a monolith of of Eastern media fandom. You've most likely already seen the chsracters before without realizing it. The main characters name is Reimu, she's a vaguely teenage girl whose role in the series is as a shrine maiden, and she works to maintain order in an alternate dimension that exists in Japan called Gensokyo. That involves getting into a lot of battles with youkai and other creatures. My most recent memory of this series is watching my friend play through all of Touhou 19 on Discord and because of the way that game works you fight the final boss many many times and it got stuck in my head harder than almost anything else I've ever heard, so I'd definently like to vouch for that song lmao. I believe it's called Kingdom of Nothingness. It has some extremely haunting sounding vocals, a slightly rare thing in the series as far as I know. It's not a lyrical theme it's kinda just vocal sounds idk how to describe them

Chances are if youve been on the Internet long enough, youll have encountered Touhou at some point, such as with songs like Night of Nights and Bad Apple, both being remixes of songs from the games. Unfortunately, because of how widespread Touhou is on the Internet it also isnt always credited, such as that Omae Wa Mou song Deadman did that was actually a remix of a remix of a Touhou song but he actually originally plagiarized the remix by not crediting the original and even trying to sell his version. Luckily, in the last few years Touhou has been becoming even more prominent in the west and its really nice to see!

I personally haven't heard anything from Zun in over a decade, so it's kinda fun to hear how some things have changed. Still sounds like he adheres to his "Section A, Section B is a slightly modified Section A, then loop" format but that works fine when you're dodging billions of bullets onscreen. As far as a further recommendation (remember, I'm ancient-school) I'm partial to the beat-rush of `Suwako Moriya's Theme - Native Faith` [Touhou 10, 2007] and the flow of `Yukari's Theme - Necrofantasia` [Touhou 7, 2003] even though I personally like Ran Yakumo's (relatively) calmer version better; it'd be less interesting to react to, I think.

This is definitely not one of the more interesting Touhou tracks, although honestly, it still showcases some of the 'isms of Zun's songwriting. Most of his songs are built from 2 sections, usually the first one being simpler with the second one being busier and sometimes building on the first one. They're generally fairly short, and designed to loop continuously while you fight. Since each theme is relatively short, and repeated often during a battle it really creates a strong association between the character and their theme. And because the themes are so short, and there are so many of them (each level has it's own theme, and then the boss has a separate theme), it's led to a lot of mixing multiple themes together in fan remixes (something only occasionally heard in other video game remixes). Definitely hoping you check out more Touhou music sooner rather than later. It would be particularly interesting if you could listen to one or 2 original pieces and then listen to a remix which incorporates them in the same video.

Might as well recommend the Eiki theme from ninth game. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpywqoePmNKpgNk In a game where most themes are rather relatively calm, the theme of the final boss is very bombastic. Possibly to indicate her status as the judge of the dead and consequently kinda above others (though she does genuinely try to help alive people in avoiding the bad outcome, even if it means being harsh and blunt about their shortcomings). Oh yeah also you're going to hear this song a lot in the actual game because even though the characters you face are dependent on who you picked, everyone faces her at the end, on Stage 9, (obviously aside from Eiki herself) and her AI values are cranked up to the point where Round 1 is nigh impossible to win and the following rounds are also pretty durable (R2 is about as durable as previous stage's R1, R3 is about as durable as like Stage 6/7 R1 and even R4 takes a while... and if you're on highest difficulty then it stays durable all the way to R5, but good luck having enough remaining lives to even be able to see Round 5 on Eiki lol). All the games have their own style, so Touhou 18 sounds different from Touhou 15 and 12, etc. . Most tracks don't go too crazy with the percussion, but you may like Pristine Beat from Touhou 14. It's the theme for a sentient Taiko drum.

It's a good track, but I think other tracks deserve just as much exposure. Showing off niche tracks is also great.

While its a classic, imo, its better to show off ZUN new themes too, gotta show that the man is still composing bangers and leave the nostalgia behind some, since, i kid you not, 4 out of 5 comments will mention always one out of like 5-6 tracks including Septette for the dead girl, UN Owen was Her, Extend Ash, Hartman Youkai Girl or Nuclear Fusion, gotta give spotlight to some less known but equally good too
