@@DrumRollTonyReacts The battle themes all fit each main character's personality. Throughout the series the main character you play is Dante, and most of his battle musics are heavy metal songs to fit his cool, devil-may-care, and cocky. Vergil his is twin brother and he's cold, aloof, and edgy. Nero is the new kid that's rebellious, and young. He's essentially kind of a punk with a heart of gold.

Vergil is a half demon half human. His song is about him feeling that he needs to repress his human side (bury the light, if you will). He's lived a traumatic life that has taught him that human things like family and love are weaknesses that only cause pain, and only through the pursuit of demonic power can he be safe from further pain - he's brooding and dark and edgy and makes a big show of loudly declaring how he's above petty human concerns. Nero is Vergil's son, though he doesn't know it at the start of DMC5, and was raised as a human. His story is about embracing the latent demonic (and human!) rage boiling inside him due to the ways he's been mistreated and used throughout his life, accepting every part of himself and his origin, and basically becoming his own person. Nero's story is a quintessentially teenage arc, and I think Devil Trigger reflects that with it's simpler, pop-ier elements and intentionally blunt, unsophisticated lyrics. And I think the two stories tie together beautifully when you hear the Devil Trigger motif pop up towards the end of Bury the Light - it's not just a nod to the family connection between Nero and Vergil, but an acknowledgement that under his brooding, cold, edgy exterior, Vergil is still struggling with the same questions of identity and self that his son is, that there's a part of him that's still just a hurt, angry kid lashing out at those around him because he doesn't fully understand his own emotions.

You have absolutely got to listen to the Metal Gear Rising soundtrack- especially the vocal tracks. It's definitely a spiritual cousin of the DMC5 soundtrack, and they've both been getting a lot of love recently for good reason. The MGR soundtrack is especially interesting because of how it's mixed in-game- the first two-thirds of each major fight are instrumental buildup, before the vocals kick in for the final phase. The lyrics for each fight are the lion's share of the characterization that each of the enemies gets, meaning you only really get a sense of who they are and what they want as they struggle for their lives in the final minute or two of the fight. The lyrics are thematically amazing and the music is compositionally astounding.

Vergil- Nero’s father: Bury the light: “humanity is a side of me that is weak, my demon half is what gives me power. I must repress my humanity and embrace my true power” Nero-Vergil’s son: Devil trigger: “I’ve tried repressing the demon side of me for so long, I don’t care if it further alienates me, I have to unleash my demon power raging inside” Vergil’s theme is about repressing a part of himself, and Nero’s is about embracing a part of himself. Good theming :)

Now nero's history is a bit weird, on the xbox 360/ps3 we thought for dmc4 that it was going to be Dante again but at the beginning of the game we were introduced to Nero. Now Nero was actually a mistake in the English translation of dmc1 where Nelo(pronounced Nee-low) Angelo was actually supposed to be Nero Angelo, but Capcom still wanted the name Nero in the games so Nero was born. Yes my man Nero is a mistake.

Vergil is a master swordsman that carries massive childhood trauma and views the pursuit of more power as a means to take control of his life and prevent the events that lead to that trauma from happening again. He's sort of a mix of anti-hero and anti-villain. In-game his play style focuses on measured/precise application of overwhelming force and avoiding being hit. Nero is a young, somewhat inexperienced devil hunter who has more than a bit of a temper at times. One of his attack combos is basically him throwing away all technique and just slamming his sword repeatedly into his target. It's a version of the Red Oni/Blue Oni storytelling trope, where the Red Oni (usually the protagonist Dante in DMC) is hotheaded and freedom-loving in contrast to the Blue Oni (Vergil) who is calm/cold and authoritarian. Dante and Vergil are even color-coded with red and blue clothing respectively. Speaking of Dante you should check out "Devils Never Cry" from the DMC3 OST and "Subhuman" from DMC5, they're related to his character.

Vergil is not only always seeking power, he doesn't understand why their mother managed to 'save' Dante, but not him. Vergil was outside playing in the yardd, at.. I think 8 or 9? (Could be off one or two) When Mundus attacked. Their mother managed to hide Dante, but was killed on her way to get to Vergil. That was when Vergil's demon side came out. Because he always thought their mother ONLY loved Dante. And as I said. That much power to kill demons as a child... It's little wonder Vergil is always seeking more. Power can be a VERY intoxicating drug. Even at the cost of your humanity. To put it simply... Vergil has always been somewhat 'jealous' of Dante for that night.

The themes for each character reflects their personalitys and age. Nero is young so they have a pop song he has big potential so it that shooting star kinda rising to it with the darkness of the devil behind it. Virgil is a well established character who is much older so its refined and reflects his outlook on life which is quite dark overall. There is one more song and its for Dante who is Virgils twin and the star of the show he is light hearted without a care in the world and a badass so you can tell what that will sound like.

You probably know from the other comments that Vergil is Nero's father and the two have lived kind of contrasting lives, but there's actually a part to both Bury the Light and Devil Trigger that exemplifies this. There is a passage in each song that is the exact same melody but has different lyrics. In Bury the Light, it's near the end and says, "Bury the light deep within, cast aside there's no going home," whereas the equal passage in Devil Trigger says, "Embrace the darkness that's within me, no hiding in the shadows anymore." I just think it's so cool that the same melody appears in both songs

I think you're referring to a "riser" at 10:37, a sort of electronic whooshing that rises in pitch and intensity. I don't know a lot about music theory in general, electronic included, but I try to listen to what a lot of composers have to say so I pick up a few things. I always enjoy hearing music reactions from someone versed in music because I always feel like I'm learning. Great reaction!

Alright as comprehensive a breakdown I can provide Virgil is Nero's absentee father. Virgil is cold and emotionless he has utter disdain for the human half of his soul, he views it as weakness, an obstacle in his pursuit of Power. Nero is nearly the opposite, he's defined by his connections to other people, motivated by grief and a desire to belong somewhere. The different styles of the songs reflect these near polar opposite outlooks on life Another thing I think is worth noting is that there's a distinct generational difference between them, Bury the light is hardcore/metal while I'd say Devil Trigger is very pop-punk/alt-rock. Something of note tho is the way the lyrics treat their subject, compare these two lines - I am the storm that is approaching - I'm the wildfire you won't tame Both pieces treat their protagonists like they're forces of nature on a destructive path, there's other lyrical parallels, like the symbolism of the nighttime and such. So, while thematically they are opposites of one another, the drive they have to achieve is what they share below the surface.

a (not so) quick explanation about DMC: It's a world where demons exist. One of the strongest is called Sparda, this demon rebelled and married a human. From this union, the twins Dante and Vergil were born, who are half human and half demon. They separated in childhood. Dante is the great hero and protagonist of the first games, Vergil is almost always on the opposite side, being one of the great villains of the game. Nero only appeared in the fourth game, he had the appearance of Dante and a demonic hand. Nothing was explained in this game, but there was a strong theory that Nero was Vergil's son, which was confirmed in the last game.

A few Informations about the three main characters so that you now a few things about them. Vergil: I would say that he's a badass whos only goal is to gain strengh and he's pretty much always looking down on others. His fighting style is very fast and elegant. Nero: is the son of Vergil, he's young and very impulsive and always wants to fight. His fighting style is wild and has a huge variety because of the devil breakers Dante: He's the brother of Vergil. If I had to guess his Personality than I would say that he just doesn't give a fuck about most of the things and he's also pretty badass (but in a different way than Vergil). His fighting style is very brute and straight forward and he uses more strengh rather than speed like Vergil Hope you also react to dante' s theme :)

Music in DMC MUST be good bc it’s one of the main reasons (if not the main) to get good. Basically, tracks for dmc games (and a lot of other slashers) are separable into core fragments and the song progresses to more active and epic and upbit parts only if you hit a high combo (sorta, it’s called Style in dmc). So if you wanna EMBRACE THE DARKNESS THAT’S WITHIN or PULL YOUR DEVIL TRIGGER you better get those Smokin Sexy Style a lot On a side note, can’t wait to hear your reaction to Devils Never Cry, Dante’s battle theme from DMC3!

Great video, keep up the good work! I haven't got much to add for DMC5, so instead i'd like to suggest you take a listen to the Guilty Gear series soundtrack, since i personally like it a lot. I'd suggest starting with Smell of the Game, Heavy Day or Big Blast Sonic just to see if you vibe with it

People are going to recommend Dante's theme but I'd also recommend Nero's theme from DMC4 "Never Surrender" or Dante's theme from DMC3 "Devils Never Cry". If you play DMCV there's also a thing that takes you through the story of the old games and it plays a the character theme from them. Also the version on the game is a little quick with lots of reading but there's a voiced version on the official KZbin channel. People have probably mentioned that the letter ranking effects the part of song mid fight. Depending on the version you get of the game you can get the top 4 songs from each game and choose which one to play mid fight aside from the four character themes from 5. They also work with the letter ranking.

I've seen this thing happen a few times where a music head will break down tracks from a game or show and say something like "there's a sense of loss here" or "there's a lot of contrast between these two tracks" and just generally sniping story beats out of the sound with a high degree of accuracy. Some comments have already referred to the reason there's a contrast between this and Bury the Light, but I just wanted to say that as a story writer I think it's cool that artists in a totally different medium can access the stories that have inspired me over the years through the same music that captured my imagination when I first heard it. If you ever see this, keep doing analysis, it's super dope.

capcom always says "no guitar" but decide to hire metal heads and they always go like "nuh, imma put sum guitars in that sh*t after 1 minute runtime" and then it turns out to be great and they accept it anyway.

So since no one said (that I saw) another of the many fun facts is that the female vocalist for this song as well as many of Casey’s songs is his wife. He also did music for killer instinct and she sang for those as well

the interesting connection between devil trigger and bury the light is they use the same motif, but lyrically they are opposite. this is a reference to the similar nature between them as father and son (both are very fixated in gaining power to achieve their goals), but also contrasts how they are completely opposite to each other in how they approach things in life (they wish for power for completely different reasons, nero to protect his family and friends and vergil for his own selfish desires).

As of video game music you should react to Guity Gear STRIVE music, all the music from the Guity Gear franchise is some kind of rock tribute, from STRIVE i would recommend 'Play the Hero', 'What do we fight for' and 'Armor-clad Faith', it's really cool to see how each theme resonates greatly with its characters, I gave this examples but you should totally listen to more stuff from Guity Gear OST in general. Love your videos, couldn't catch you live on twitch yet because of some timezone discrepancy

Thematically the main difference is that Nero is a hero and Vergil is a villain. I think you might've guessed as much =) And the beat that is used during the vocal sections, I wouldn't call it "poppy". I'd say it's very techno kind of beat. A little slow for DnB, more Breakbeat/Big Beat style.
