Without any spoilers this plays during a boss fight, the mantis lords are characters to be respected and instead of being ambushed like other boss fights, this you actually actively initiate yourself and it's treated like a trial. They are very swift agile and elegant which is shown in the music
@oscarhocklee2 жыл бұрын
(Also no spoilers) I tend to think of this as the most explicit fight-as-a-dance in the game. The mantis lords are happy to destroy you i f you can't keep up, sure, but they'd probably be entirely satisfied with you "winning". The fight really plays up to the call and response structure of the music, too.
@MistressNebula2 жыл бұрын
@@oscarhocklee well, the most explicit if you exclude the one character that LITERALLY calls his fight a dance, i guess

this entire fight sequence could fill multiple books on how to construct a boss fight. every single aspect of it is a masterclass in game design. the music, chirography, scaling, rhythm and constraints are all perfect. it all made it feel more like a dance than a fight, it pulls you in and demands your respect and attention so you wouldn't step on each other toes.

The fight during which this theme plays feels very much like a dance. It has a clear rhythm and pattern to it, and the call-and-response you hear in the music is reflected in the battle itself, too. The fight can feel a little overwhelming at first, but once you learn its rhythm and treat it like the elegant dance that it is, it becomes incredibly fun.

This is an optional arena fight versus one of the most intelligent and proud race of warriors, the Mantises. In the game they are the only ones that have stood up and were not affected by the corruption that affects everyone. The lords here are basically the royalty of this place. The fight is a means to earn their respect and trust. They are very dexterous and fast. Its an insane boss fight in terms of adrenaline, you literally need to dance to the music. Very memorable.

You’ve probably seen it mentioned in other comments but I highly recommend the Grimm troop (trilogy?) on the Hollow Knight: Gods and Nightmares ost The first is a short interlude called Nightmare Lantern which sets the scene and mood for the following songs The second is The Grimm Troop, a truly haunting, epic, baroque-esc piece which I think you’ll take special interest in Mr ‘drumroll’ ;) And the last is Nightmare King which takes the previous piece to its logical extreme in all aspects as it is the hard mode version of the Grimm boss fight I personally believe the experience is best all together but do as you will music man

This is the theme to my second favorite boss in this game, primarily because of the design but also because of the context. Where there majority of bosses ambush you in their boss room, to fight the Mantis Lords you need to approach them on their thrones and interact with them. They’re also one of three bosses that you don’t kill at the end of the fight, and they show you respect afterwards.

This piece plays during a boss battle with the titular Mantis Lords - three leaders of a noble warrior tribe. The fight is very rhythmic - the graceful mantises attack you in a regular pattern, and you must learn to respond to each one in turn, creating a sort of lethal dance (alluded to by the repeating calls and responses). The boss and their theme are definitely fan favorites.

Mantis Lords is an incredibly hard fight for a new player, but if you can beat them, you get access to one of my favorite charms and a late-ish game area. If you can brave this area, you get access to the other late game areas with unlocks in them. Double jump, multiple health and soul upgrades, massive amount of nice charms, and access to Kings Station, arguably the late game hub.

Hollow Knight is the Bugs version of Dark Souls and shares many story similarities, the Mantis Lords are about the third boss in the game and the fight is in my opinion one of the best in the game along side some endgame bosses. The Mantis Lords are very well respected warriors in Hollow Knight lore and work around the clock keeping a promise made a very very long time ago and this boss fight is also where the game starts kicking off for real with it's bosses and they actually start getting pretty hard, not that the fight itself is super complex or anything the fight plays more like dance and once you learn the steps it becomes one of the most memorable boss fights in Hollow Knight and there are MANY good fights in Hollow Knight so picking just a few that stand out is often very hard. There is another version of this song called "Sisters of Battle" and without spoilers as much as possible it's another version of this fight and I would love to see thoughts on it. Great Video!

Sort-of minor spoiler alert: As you navigate the underground bug kingdom of Hallownest you encounter many once-dead bugs reanimated by a sweet-tasting orange corruption throughout its many caves. As you make your way further down its Fungal Wastes you encounter the Mantis tribe. They, unlike most of the bugs you've encountered so far, retain their intelligence and are not infected by the orange sickness. They are a skilled but ruthless clan, mounting their trophies on pikes as a warning to intruders. As you explore their village while combating its skilled inhabitants you come across their Lords. The three sisters (with an absent, traitorous fourth that succumbed to the orange corruption) remain on their thrones guarding a massive door leading even deeper into Hallownest. They look at you. Watch you. You draw your nail and they stand (cue soundtrack), accepting your challenge. You fight one and after a skilled exchange she retires to her throne. Then you fight the remaining two at once. After being bested by the Knight they, too, return to their thrones. The duel is over and they acknowledge you with a reverential bow, opening the heavy gate as they do so. The door holding back the Beasts. The door leading into Deepnest. On subsequent visits all of the once-hostile mantises bow in the same way the Lords did and don't attack you unless you attack them first.

So technically mantis lords are the only bosses in the game that don’t stand in the way of the protagonist from a gameplay perspective. Instead of an instant ambushing like every other boss , Mantis lords are an optional challenge. Feels more like a trial than a fight! They just making sure you are worthy enough of the task you’ve been given. Before engage with them , the whole mantis tribe attacks you in an instant if you approach their village. After you pass the challenge you earn the whole village’s respect and you can move freely without bothering you any more.
