As part of our MUSIC IN CUBA series, we bring you into the private rehearsal space of Cuban salsa group, Pupy y Los Que Son Son in Havana. On this day, the band was learning an Adalberto Alvarez song, Agua que Cae del Cielo, to present at an event honoring Adalberto. This is Cuban salsa, also known as timba, at its best.
Alisa Froman, PlazaCUBA’s director, has been working with Pupy since the 90s when he was still a composer and piano player in Los Van Van. And with a history of over 20 years of music and dance tours to Cuba, she has continued to form a close relationship with Pupy. Little known trivia: Alisa hired Pupy to play for a wedding at the Pedregal in Havana in 2001, which was one of the orchestra’s first public performances as Pupy y Los Que Son Son.
Pupy works as a teacher in our music workshops, and with his band, has presented private performances to our groups of travelers almost every year since 2000. He represents an integral part of PlazaCUBA’s tours, and when you travel with us you are sure to meet him.
Wondering why Lachy Fortuna is wearing a motorcycle helmet? It’s not because agua is cayendo del cielo, but because the ceiling is falling apart and he doesn’t want to get hit in the head with a piece of the techo.
