You can't show someone "Ddaeng" and NOT show them the lyric/cultural reference breakdown!!!!!! The insane word play elevates this song to the stratosphere! I'm sorry... did he say "their audience isn't used to fire lyrics?"

being a ddaeng enthusiast, i would highly suggest pairing any ddaeng reaction with the DKDTV explanation video. it explains in depth the intricacies that only a korean would understand. it’s mind blowing.

@@m..na.disagree, they analyze songs all the time when they turn on subtitles and read lyrics, talk about tones, notes, parts that they like or dislike in a song etc all of that is an analysis and that works fine for most kpop songs but it doesn’t work for ddaeng because it’s unlike other kpop songs. ddaeng’s lyrics are filled with word play and cultural references that may not make any sense to the listener who is trying to get a feel of the song by reading the lyrics. understanding the word play, references and even the sounds is will allow others to fully appreciate ddaeng. It’s up to them if they want to react to the explanation video or not, but most army would agree that it’s essential.

Lyrical context is definitely needed for Ddang. They are so many cultural references that play into way they are rapping the way they are. There are lyrics that call for softer tone rather than attacking the beat. Which was mentioned in the critique. Sometimes understand meaning behind lyrics explains reason why certain points on the song carry different tones.

I will say for people that aren’t extremely familiar with bts content who don’t speak fluent Korean, the lyrics may be so simultaneously direct/indirect because of translation. A lot of wording and phrases get lost in making it accessible to English and non-Korean speakers

Cool to see his reaction and breakdown. I enjoyed it. This had me cracking up. "their audience isn't used to fire lyrics?" (did he really say that? Did I hear that wrong?). Hahahahahaha. OMG. Yeah, nah. Fire lyrics is one of the main reasons why I love BTS. They excel in fire lyrics. Hope you both have a great day!

Guys - like many probably already commented- If you listen to DDaeng, also watch the explanation video. I can understand that when we listen to music people can’t expect us to look up for explanations etc. That’s not how it works. But since you are reacting we just want to tell you. Ddaeng is a song that you don’t understand without the explanation. Like him saying he wishes Hobi would be like TAK-TAK-TAK. It’s about being calm and cheeky and being overly polite it can be seen as mocking again. It’s such a satisfying diss track to be honest 😂

I highly recommend you show him(or he can on his own) the studio/album version of Tear. Because it is live those little things he was looking for (like the auto tuned parts in Suga’s verse) are there but aren’t translated into the live performance. I really would love to see Drew react to more BTS (specifically the rap line and their solo works) because the boys ARE producers and writers. Suga specifically auditioned for BigHit/HYBE to produce actually before they put him in the group. So I would love to see his reactions and break downs of their work!

The instruments in Ddaeng are traditional Chinese ones, I think. Not a guitar. Pipa, dizi, guzheng, and erhu. And outro:Tear makes me cry everytime i hear it. It was written when they were thinking of disbanding. J-Hope sounds like his heart is being ripped out. Also in the recorded version they use autotune when he says T.E.A.R and in one of the other lives. Like how you break it down, very much. 😘💜💜💜

I think Ddaeng is like a laid back flex/swag rapping for them, it's the unofficial 4th cypher - that attack you were talking about is what they did in the first 3 so they did something different in Ddaeng. I never did notice Hobi rapping like the chorus though, I guess when you get to know their styles too well you don't notice stuff like that xD

This video was great, love seeing him break down the production and rap. The "guitar" is actually two different Korean instruments, gayageum and yanggeum! Would be interested what he thinks about some songs with a more mellow vibe like "Outro: Her", which is a boombap track, and RM's "seoul" and "moonchild", which are more lofi, melodic rap tracks with some interesting production imo! :) If anyone's interested in checking out the instruments behind that "guitar" sound, I highly recommend this Black Swan gayageum cover: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5PNnJeHoMSHa7c and this Inuyasha OST yanggeum cover: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5ivdZd4hKqGeJI

I enjoy his analysis of rap but I think I have to disagree about something he said about Ddaeng. IMO that beat wouldn't work with harder flow or more attack. In my mind that would be too discordant and would diminish either the rap or the music. As an example think about Em's Lose Yourself. That beat was made for how he kept ramping up and up on it. Now change his flow to something softer or whispery. The music doesn't call for that right? You showed him Tear as well and it shows they know when to throw that power and when not to. Ddaeng was a clinic in wordplay and wasn't made to be super forceful or aggressive. In fact it seems purposely mellow showing how calmly they can lyrically blow you out of the water. That's my two cents. Also the audience isn't used to fire lyrics?? The lyrics is what BTS is known for plus I'm guessing he doesn't get a 1/3rd of the meanings behind Ddaeng. Funny enough the album version of Tear does have autotune for Suga's verse.
